Rebecca Gayheart is dedicated to supporting her ex-husband, Eric Dane, as he faces ALS. In a recent essay for The Cut, the 54-year-old actress explained how she had to advocate with insurance companies to ensure Dane receives constant care, stating he now has nurses with him around the clock.
Actor Dane, famous for his part in Grey’s Anatomy, shared with PEOPLE magazine in April that he has been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that gradually causes paralysis by damaging nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Currently, there is no cure. As it progresses, ALS makes it increasingly difficult for individuals to perform essential functions like speaking, walking, eating, and breathing on their own, as noted by the Mayo Clinic.
Since separating from Dane in 2018, Gayheart has been heavily involved in overseeing his medical needs. She explained that navigating the healthcare system is a challenge in itself, often involving denials from insurance companies and repeated appeals and applications.
She remembered a frustrating conversation with an insurance representative who bluntly told her he would continue to reject her claims no matter how many times she applied. This actually motivated her to fight even harder. “I became determined,” Gayheart said. “I was completely focused – I hit a low point, but then I finally succeeded.” After appealing twice, her request for home nursing care was finally approved.
Dane’s care is scheduled across 21 shifts. Gayheart explained that sometimes shifts go uncovered, so she fills in when she can. Recently, there was a 12-hour shift she couldn’t cover completely, only managing four hours due to her children’s activities.
She needed help covering a work shift, so she asked some friends. She felt bad having to ask, but they were happy to help immediately, offering whatever she needed. Both friends came and did a great job.
She acknowledged that some people haven’t stayed as connected over time. “I often think about people who used to be a bigger part of my life and wonder what happened to them,” she said.
After discussing it with her therapist, she understood that it’s a difficult situation for most people. She’s come to terms with the fact that not everyone can handle it well, and she doesn’t blame anyone who hasn’t been able to offer support.
Dane began experiencing health issues in early 2024. By June, he had lost all movement in his right arm and hand. His speech started to become difficult to understand in September, and he required a wheelchair for full-time mobility by October.
This story highlights the difficulties people with ALS experience and emphasizes how crucial support from family and friends can be. Rebecca Gayheart’s commitment demonstrates the incredible strength, patience, and empathy required when caring for someone with this disease.
