Actress Elizabeth Banks faced a noticeable setback at the Emmys, marking another instance where progressive viewpoints in Hollywood haven’t resonated with audiences.

Drew Barrymore, known for her role in the 2019 *Charlie’s Angels* movie – a project she later expressed disappointment with – presented an award at the Emmys on Sunday night, which celebrate the best in television.

She famously challenged Steven Spielberg in 2017 at the Women in Film awards, pointing out he had never directed a film starring a Black woman. The audience responded by shouting, “The Color Purple!” – a film he *did* direct with a Black female lead.

Now she’s back at it.

What happened at The Emmys?

The nominees for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie included six individuals, with five being women and only one man.

Elizabeth Banks was pleased that the majority of those involved were women, believing this gave them an advantage over the male director. For Banks, the focus wasn’t on skill or quality of work, but simply on gender.

She paused, then with a smile, asked the Hollywood audience, “When was the last time five women and just one man were nominated for directing?” The crowd responded with enthusiastic applause. “I didn’t even need to check,” she added, “because I’m pretty sure that’s never happened.”

The banks announced the six nominees (listed below), and playfully noted that Philip Barantini, nominated for *Adolescence*, was fittingly named ‘the one’ – a humorous connection to the film’s title.

She smirked and said, “If you know, you know.”

Banks then read the winner: “Alright, and the Emmy goes to Philip Barantini.”

Comedian Adam Carolla saw the presentation and shared a clip of it on X, jokingly tweeting, “Nice try b-itches.”
