It’s amazing to think that Elijah Wood played Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings over 25 years ago! Despite years of meeting fans at conventions, he recently revealed he still hasn’t finished reading the books themselves.
The question of whether Elijah Wood actually read The Lord of the Rings books came up when he was talking with Stephen Colbert, a big fan of Tolkien’s work. Colbert was curious to know if the rumors were true.
Elijah Wood admitted to Stephen Colbert that he felt particularly embarrassed to be discussing this topic coming from him. He explained, with a sheepish grin, that he doesn’t know anyone who loves Tolkien’s work as much as Colbert does, or who has read the books more thoroughly. He added that filming actually began in September of 1999, making it 27 years ago, not 25 as he initially stated.
Everyone has a stack of books they mean to read, but taking decades to finish a series is pretty extreme – unless he’s reading it very slowly! There’s a rumor that Elijah Wood will return as Frodo in a new prequel, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis. This makes sense, as Wood has said he’d prefer to be the one to play Frodo for as long as he lives. However, Wood hasn’t confirmed or denied whether he’s involved, and perhaps he’ll finally find time to finish reading those novels before filming begins.
