Elden Ring Fan Restores Kalé’s Cut Frenzied Flame Questline

Elden Ring doesn’t waste any time challenging players. The very first enemy, the Grafted Scion, is built to defeat you quickly. The difficulty continues with the imposing Tree Sentinel also patrolling the starting area, and a character who harshly criticizes you for being ‘maidenless’. Thankfully, you eventually encounter Merchant Kalé, the first friendly NPC in the game.

You’ll meet Kalé, a merchant dressed as Santa Claus, who sells helpful items. But he wasn’t always a shopkeeper! Originally, the game’s developers planned for Kalé to have a much bigger role, pushing players towards the dangerous Frenzied Flame. This was due to his anger over the actions of Marika and the Golden Order towards his people. A dataminer discovered these early plans four years ago, and now a modder named Transquility has brought them to life in Elden Ring with the ‘Merchant Kalé Questline Restored’ mod (as reported by PC Gamer).

Kalé Had A Much Bigger Role In What Could Have Been Elden Ring’s Best Quest

Originally, after you beat Godrick, Kalé was going to travel to Liurnia and then Leyndell, following the trail of the Grand Caravan. However, we’ve already decided what happens to him instead.

You’ll find the Caravan of Nomadic Merchants in the Subterranean Shunning, but most will be dead. Kalé, filled with rage at the Golden Order for killing his ancestors, will attempt to claim the Flame of Frenzy. When he fails, it clears the way for you to take up the flame and plunge The Lands Between into chaos.

We still don’t know why this quest was originally removed from the game, but a mod now lets you experience it. The mod creator made a few changes to make it work smoothly, but the quest is largely unchanged. Even if you don’t play the whole thing, it’s worth trying just to see Nabil Elouahabi’s performance as Kalé – he has a much larger role now.
