Dua Lipa has expressed her disappointment with how the media has covered the Jeffrey Epstein case, particularly feeling that the focus hasn’t been enough on supporting the survivors. On a recent episode of her book club podcast, Service95, she talked with author Roxane Gay about how the words used in reporting can affect how the public understands and reacts to traumatic events.
The singer believes news reports have downplayed the seriousness of the late billionaire’s crimes. “The way these crimes are being described, and the words used, really disrespects the victims,” Lipa told her guest.
She was deeply worried that the media often uses gentle language when reporting on child exploitation and human trafficking, which downplays the seriousness of these crimes. She explained, “I’m troubled by how stories focus on the events themselves – like parties involving underage girls – instead of highlighting the fact that these were children who were victims of trafficking.”
Lipa believes this careful wording is used either to soften the impact of the events for the public or to safeguard specific groups. She explained, “It’s like covering things up, possibly to protect the reader, or to hide the truth about what’s really going on.”
The conversation started after a large number of documents were made public in early 2024, revealing connections between Epstein, his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and many well-known people. Although figures like Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and Bill Gates were mentioned in the files, Dua Lipa thinks the attention has become overly focused on celebrity connections rather than the more important issues.
Maxwell is in prison for twenty years due to her involvement in a sex-trafficking scheme. Epstein, also involved, died in 2019 before he could be tried. The recently released documents have caused significant disruption in the music industry, leading to the loss of influence for prominent figures such as Casey Wasserman.
Following the release of files revealing past communication between him and Maxwell, Wasserman resigned from and sold his talent agency. Soon after, prominent artists such as Chappell Roan and Orville Peck ended their relationships with the agency.
Wasserman released a statement apologizing for his past communications with Ghislaine Maxwell. He explained that the correspondence happened over twenty years ago, before the full scope of her crimes was public. He said, “I sincerely regret my letters to Ghislaine Maxwell, as they occurred a long time ago, before the extent of her terrible actions was known.”
Lipa’s decision to address this difficult topic aligns with her long-standing commitment to social and political causes. She often uses her large following to raise awareness about the crisis in Gaza and advocate for the rights of Palestinians.
Dua Lipa continues to be a major figure in music worldwide, especially after releasing her third album. “Radical Optimism,” which came out in 2024, has been well-received and features a fresh sound, drawing inspiration from psychedelic music and Britpop – a departure from her earlier style.
The album featured popular songs like “Houdini” and “Training Season” and climbed to number two on the Billboard 200 chart. Beyond music, Dua Lipa has grown her Service95 brand to include a full lifestyle newsletter and podcast.
The singer has also found success in movies, with roles in the hit 2023 film Barbie and the spy thriller Argylle. In Barbie, she played Mermaid Barbie and performed the lead song, ‘Dance the Night,’ which was featured on the movie’s soundtrack.
