Kazuhiko Torishima, who originally edited the Dragon Ball manga, has caused a stir by publicly criticizing the new anime series, Dragon Ball Daima, calling it poor quality.
In a livestream interview with KosoKoso on September 15, 2025, Torishima expressed a preference for a story focused on Vegeta, stating that it would be better than continuing *Dragon Ball Super*. He also sharply criticized *Dragon Ball Daima*, calling it a poorly made anime.
Torishima is famous for being very direct with his opinions about popular series. He’s spoken critically of Dragon Ball, believing it should have ended after the Frieza saga, and he’s also doubted the potential success of One Piece.
Although his remarks about Daima were critical, the anime itself has been criticized by fans for moving slowly, having a plot that’s easy to guess, and leaning too much on familiar elements from the past. Some viewers also thought it was geared towards children, which didn’t match what they expected from a continuation of the series.
Dragon Ball Daima premiered on Fuji TV in October 2024 and ran until February 2025. It’s the sixth animated series in the Dragon Ball franchise.
The story takes place between the events of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, Piccolo, and their friends are magically transformed into their younger selves by the evil demon king Gomah. They team up and journey through the dangerous Demon Realm to find special Dragon Balls and reverse Gomah’s wish.
Even though one critic, Torishima, was quite harsh, the series has generally been well-received. Mariló Delgado from Espinof described it as “an exercise in nostalgia” and gave it a 4 out of 5 stars, pointing out that the story unfolds gradually.
Critics had varying opinions on the show’s speed, but generally agreed it delivered on the expectations of the series. Joshua Fox from Screen Rant especially enjoyed the action and comedy, and declared episode eight was the moment anime fans had been waiting for. Daniel Kurland of CBR gave episode seventeen a perfect score, praising its incredible animation and cinematic fight scenes. Episode nineteen, titled “Betrayal,” became the highest-rated anime episode of 2025, with reviewers highlighting the impressive fight choreography and humor.
Although most people liked the English dub, fans were frustrated by the late release on streaming platforms, making it difficult for viewers outside of certain regions to watch the show as it aired.
