Don Lemon Claps Back at Nicki Minaj Over Controversial Homophobic Post

A public disagreement has broken out between rapper Nicki Minaj and journalist Don Lemon, starting with a news story from Minnesota. It began over the weekend when Lemon, who used to work at CNN, was reporting on a protest in St. Paul. The protest happened outside a church where a local director from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was attending a service.

Activists protested immigration policies and a journalist, Lemon, filmed the event for his online platform. However, the rapper Nicki Minaj, known for her song “Super Freaky Girl,” was upset that the protest took place at a church and publicly criticized the journalist’s approach on X (formerly Twitter).

Nicki Minaj strongly criticized Don Lemon in a heated online post, demanding he face legal consequences for his actions. She used harsh language, calling him a derogatory name and stating, “I want that thug in jail!!!!!” Minaj also claimed Lemon disrespected religious beliefs with his coverage.

Minaj continued her strong criticism, claiming Lemon was intentionally singling out Christianity. She tweeted, “HE WOULD NEVER DO THAT TO ANY OTHER RELIGION. LOCK HIM UP!!!!!” This harsh statement quickly spread on social media, leading to a discussion about where the line should be drawn between reporting the news and expressing an opinion.

Don Lemon quickly responded to Nicki Minaj’s claims. On January 19th, he appeared on the “I’ve Had It Podcast,” where co-host Jennifer Welch read Minaj’s tweet to him. Lemon, now working on his own after leaving cable news, used the interview to challenge Minaj’s points and question her sincerity.

During a podcast, Don Lemon directly stated that Nicki Minaj is not Christian and lacks understanding of the faith. He further criticized her, claiming she manipulates her fans for personal gain, calling her a “grifter.”

Look, as a critic, I have to say Don Lemon made a pretty strong point about Nicki Minaj. He argued that she seems to exploit her fanbase – specifically Black and LGBTQ+ communities who have consistently supported her – purely for profit. He essentially claimed she doesn’t genuinely care about the people who made her successful, seeing them only as a means to an end. It’s a harsh assessment, but he definitely laid out a clear argument about her motivations.

Honestly, this journalist didn’t hold back. He went on a real rant, saying if physical records were still popular, he’d be destroying anything by Nicki Minaj. He even admitted to being glad he never championed her work – it was a surprisingly harsh and dismissive take, to say the least. It felt less like critique and more like personal animosity.

Lemon stated he’s never liked Nicki Minaj and isn’t familiar with her music. He went on to criticize her, calling her someone who seeks approval from those she disagrees with, and said he intentionally avoids including her music on his playlists.

Following his departure from CNN in April 2023 after seventeen years, Don Lemon has started a new venture. He now hosts The Don Lemon Show, an independent program launched on X (formerly Twitter). This allows him to discuss politics and culture freely, without the limitations of a large media company. He previously anchored Don Lemon Tonight and co-hosted CNN This Morning.

Lemon is also the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir, This Is the Fire: What I Say to My Friends About Racism. He continues to be a prominent and often controversial figure in media, frequently addressing topics like race, gender, and civil rights. His recent reporting from Minnesota demonstrates a renewed focus on traditional field journalism.

Nicki Minaj, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, continues to be a major force in music. Known as the “Queen of Rap,” she recently released Pink Friday 2, a follow-up to the album that first made her famous. The new album includes collaborations with top artists like Drake and J. Cole, and she promoted it with a hugely successful world tour that sold out venues everywhere.

Nicki Minaj isn’t just a musician; she’s also built a business empire with ventures into perfumes and fashion. She’s famous for her incredibly dedicated fans, called the “Barbz,” who are known for strongly defending her online. Though she’s done some voice acting in movies like Ice Age: Continental Drift and The Angry Birds Movie 2, her main priority is still being a leading force in hip-hop.
