Doechii hits back at the critics who say her music is too deep

As a seasoned hip-hop enthusiast who’s been following the genre since its golden era, I wholeheartedly stand with Doechii. Her music resonates deeply with me because it mirrors my own journey and experiences as a black artist in this world.

Instead of being typical in the world of rapping, Doechii stands out with her unconventional lyrics, songs, and visual style that some might describe as offbeat or avant-garde. However, not everyone appreciates rappers who opt for an unusual approach to their music.

Actually, some people prefer not to engage their minds too much with rap music that challenges them, instead opting for tunes centered around traditional rap themes such as wealth, fashion, and luxury vehicles. Alternatively, they might be drawn to music that encourages a festive spirit.

It appears that ardent followers of rap music are the ones voicing criticisms about Doechii’s music being overly complex. Yesterday, she addressed these detractors on X and delved briefly into some significant moments in hip-hop history.

In her article, the resident of Florida expressed that rap music has historically been thought-provoking, which is true since even the early rappers from the ’70s block parties in New York City didn’t entirely avoid incorporating socially relevant themes into their rhymes.

Doechii tweeted, “Our music has always run deep. It’s always been intricate and spiritual. We utilize hip hop as a means to progress, to protest, to rejoice, and so forth. Art/music significantly contributes to why many of us take pride in our black identity today. Our culture permeates throughout these genres. Don’t let others manipulate your perception into detaching from the essence of hip hop by making you believe it isn’t trendy or ‘too complex’. It’s always been that profound for us, and it should remain so. We originated it! If we lose the essence, we’ve lost the genre.

She emphasized, “It’s essential that we, ourselves, are the ones shaping our art form. Anyone criticizing hip hop who provokes thought or stirs emotions should be identified as an adversary. Contemplate this: what benefits do they derive from diluting our music, stripping it of its essence, focusing on superficial topics, and losing their awareness.

Yesterday’s post by Doechii garnered a significant amount of appreciation. Many people mentioned that her unique artistic style and reasoning were the factors that initially made them avid fans. As I write this, the post has amassed more than 36,000 likes.
