Disney and the BBC have ended their agreement to create new Doctor Who episodes together on Disney+. This decision comes only three years after they first announced the partnership.
The show’s direction is changing due to recent seasons performing poorly with viewers and receiving a mixed response, particularly to Jodie Whittaker’s last appearances and the initial episodes featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor.
According to sources at Deadline, Disney made this decision for two key reasons. First, Ncuti Gatwa was slated to continue the success of former Doctors like Matt Smith and David Tennant.
According to a source close to the show, playing the Doctor involves more than just acting. It requires representing the show and fully embodying the character for a new generation, something Matt Smith and David Tennant both did exceptionally well. The source suggests that Ncuti Gatwa hasn’t fully taken on that ambassadorial role or promoted the show as much as anticipated.
Another reason for the reaction, sources say, was how the show handled diversity and inclusion, which sparked some controversy in the US. The series notably cast transgender actress Yasmin Finney, showed a romantic kiss between Ncuti Gatwa and Jonathan Groff, and featured drag queen Jinkx Monsoon as a character playing the villain.
According to one source, the show’s progressive themes were considered unsuitable for an American audience under Trump’s presidency, which led Disney to distance itself. These decisions caused disagreement among viewers in both the US and the UK, impacting how the show was received.
As a long-time fan, it’s a bit worrying to see Disney pull out of the show, even though it’s still on the BBC. It feels like a big hit to their plans for reaching a worldwide audience through streaming. Honestly, the latest series hasn’t seemed to connect with viewers like it did with previous Doctors, and now I’m starting to wonder if it will still be popular internationally. It’s definitely making me think about the show’s future.
Disney’s decision to stop working with Doctor Who shows how crucial both well-known actors and what viewers think are when making deals for streaming content these days.
