As a lifelong fan who’s been rocking with Dire Straits since their self-titled debut, I can confidently say that the news of a half-speed mastered limited edition release of “Making Movies” has sent me into a frenzy! This album is a testament to Mark Knopfler’s songwriting prowess and the band’s ability to deliver timeless music.
Among my favorite albums is “Making Movies” by Dire Straits. Whenever there’s talk about a limited edition re-release of this classic, I pay close attention. Released in 1980, it was their third studio album. Coming after their sensational debut from 1978 that catapulted the band to fame, and preceding the somewhat underappreciated but still brilliant “Communique” from 1979, “Making Movies” holds a special place in my music collection.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, setting such high standards for myself after two successful releases can be quite daunting. But when it comes to Making Movies, I felt like I was leveling up. Mark Knopfler’s songwriting and arrangements were richer, more intricate than before. Every track in Making Movies is a gem, hinting that there’s so much more to my gameplay yet to be discovered.
They’re planning to celebrate National Album Day on October 19 in the UK by releasing a special edition of “Making Movies” by Dire Straits. This version will be half-speed mastered and pressed onto black 180g vinyl. In this process, the vinyl cutting is done slower than normal and the sound recording is fed into it at the same slower speed.

Instead of rushing through the process, consider taking your time as it significantly enhances the sound quality of your album, particularly in the higher frequencies which are usually harder to record. Slowing down the process decreases the frequency range and addresses this challenge effectively.
As a gamer, I’m super excited about this special edition! Instead of the usual vibrant red cover, we’ve got something unique: a pale blue cover with a striking red tab on the right. And there’s an Abbey Road half-speed mastering strip down the left, making it look like a rare collector’s item. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!
To honor the National Album Day 2024 theme, ‘Great British Bands’, a special, half-speed mastered edition of the album “Making Movies” will be launched on October 19th. This exclusive version will be available for purchase starting that day at the official Dire Straits online store and all music retailers across the UK.

Notably, albums from bands such as Dire Straits will also be available for purchase internationally. Additionally, this day showcases numerous special album releases by British acts like Babyshambles, Judas Priest, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Simple Minds, Simply Red, The Rolling Stones, and pop groups such as The Spice Girls and Sugarbabes, among others.
As a fellow music enthusiast, I’d like to direct your attention to National Album Day’s online platform, where you can find an extensive array of information about various albums, including exclusive colored vinyl editions and numerous other unique features. It’s a veritable treasure trove for collectors, especially those who appreciate the bands featured on the site – not forgetting that special Dire Straits album and cover, which are definitely worth checking out!
