Decoding an Icon: Gucci Announces New Exhibition In Shanghai

Despite undergoing significant transformation, Gucci remains mindful of its origins. Launched back in 1947, the iconic Gucci Bamboo bag swiftly established itself as a cornerstone within the brand’s identity. To celebrate this rich history, Gucci plans to host an exhibition in Shanghai called “Gucci Bamboo: Decoding an Icon.” This event, collaboratively designed with the innovative design firm 2050+, aims to recount and reveal the bag’s story through engaging exhibits and artistic partnerships.

At Sunke Villa, an upcoming exhibition will not only showcase the exhibit but also pay tribute to bamboo’s rich cultural history in China. This versatile material represents values such as resilience, honesty, modesty, and exploration, and the installations will delve into bamboo’s role as a prominent art form.

The announcement of Gucci’s launch happens right after last week’s contentious decision about their creative director. It was unexpected that Demna is leaving Balenciaga, where he had been for almost a decade. There hasn’t been any formal confirmation about his first runway show at Gucci yet, but people have already expressed concerns over whether Demna’s questionable style would be a good fit. After the announcement, Kering stocks dropped by 12%, but Kering executives still express faith in Demna’s ability to blend modernization with respect for the brand’s history.

The “Decoding an Icon” display is open to all, and it’s completely free from March 28 to April 6. You can reserve your spot ahead of time through WeChat.
