DCU ‘Lanterns’ Delayed to Late Summer 2026, No Release Date Set

The new Lanterns series from DC Studios has been pushed back. According to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, it’s now expected to premiere in late summer 2026, which is several months later than initially projected.

DC’s Lanterns Moves Back

I was really excited to hear at a Warner Bros. Discovery event in New York that the Lanterns series is now planned for late summer 2026 on both HBO and Max. Unfortunately, they didn’t give us a specific date just yet, but knowing it’s coming in ’26 is a good start!

This update signals another change for a key film in the new DC Universe being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Production and Earlier Plans

Filming for Lanterns started in February, and James Gunn and Peter Safran initially hoped to release the movie in early 2026.

Warner Bros. Discovery initially planned to release the show in early 2026, according to their third-quarter shareholder letter. However, more recent reports indicate the release might be delayed until after the Supergirl movie, which is currently slated for release in June 2026.

What We Know So Far

The eight-part series features Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. It’s a realistic mystery where Stewart and Hal Jordan team up as space-based investigators, looking into a troubling secret here on Earth.

Chris Mundy, the creator of shows like Ozark and True Detective, has described the series as a blend of a police procedural and a superhero story. He envisions a show that combines the gritty feel of noir, compelling character development, and thrilling, large-scale action.

A Key Part of Gunn’s DCU

The series Lanterns is anticipated to connect closely with the overarching story James Gunn is building for the DC Universe, and could potentially involve the villain Brainiac.

About the Release

HBO and Max are creating a new eight-episode series called Lanterns. Chris Mundy, known for True Detective: Night Country and Ozark, is the showrunner and co-writer. He’s working with executive producers Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers) and Tom King (Mister Miracle, Supergirl). The series will be a realistic crime thriller featuring two Green Lanterns as its main characters.

Aaron Pierre will star as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in the eight-episode series, set to premiere in 2026. Both actors will appear in every episode.

Nathan Fillion is back as Guy Gardner, and he’s joined by Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe.

HBO is aiming for a premiere around late summer 2026, but hasn’t announced an official release date yet.

Our insiders have told us the show is really good and eventually leads harder into sci-fi.
