For several years, famous props from the Star Wars saga have been snapped up at auction by passionate (and financially well-off) fans. However, the latest acquisition might just be the most powerful, as reported by Deadline. At Propstore auction on September 4, Darth Vader’s lightsaber, wielded by David Prowse in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, sold for an astonishing $3.9 million, making it the most expensive Star Wars prop ever purchased at auction.
Here’s what Propstore COO Brandon Alinger said about this historic Star Wars prop purchase:
Today’s sale result signifies a significant milestone, not only for Propstore but for the global film memorabilia community. Witnessing a Star Wars lightsaber – an iconic symbol from one of cinema’s most legendary sagas – breaking the record as the most valuable franchise item ever sold at auction is truly unique. This achievement underscores the lasting cultural influence of Star Wars and the fervent devotion of fans and collectors who view these artifacts as cornerstones of contemporary mythology.
In this specific Propstore auction, several cherished memorabilia from popular nerd series fetched impressive prices. One of Harrison Ford’s whips from the Indiana Jones films was sold for $485,100, while Patrick Stewart’s Ressikan flute used in the renowned Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Inner Light” was sold for $403,000. However, props from the Star Wars saga remain highly sought-after, and they continue to set the bar high. This year alone, Luke Skywalker’s medal earned at the end of A New Hope brought a significant amount. Although it didn’t reach the price tag of Darth Vader’s lightsaber. It seems the dark side indeed holds more financial power – or maybe it simply costs more!
