In a recent interview with GQ, Cynthia Erivo shared details about her relationship with her father. She explained that she last saw him when she was 16, following a disagreement at a London subway station about train tickets. She remembered him saying, “This will be the last time I ever see you,” which she found completely unexpected. “You just wouldn’t see something like that coming, would you?” she said.
I learned that Cynthia Erivo eventually lost touch with her biological father completely. It’s really sad, but she has no idea what happened to him, what he believed in, or who he connected with – it’s like a whole part of her history is just…missing. As a movie lover, I can only imagine how that lack of knowledge would shape a character, and clearly, it’s deeply affected her life.
She doesn’t even know his phone number. Even though they’re not close, she’s struck by the resemblance between them, particularly a gap in her front teeth. She explained to GQ that it’s almost funny – a cosmic joke reminding her of her own humanity. She used to listen to his voice often, describing it as beautiful, and believes her own voice developed as a result, which she finds both frustrating and amusing. She accepts it as simply a part of who she is.
Though Cynthia Erivo isn’t close to her father, she shares a strong bond with her mother, Edith. She’s demonstrated her admiration by naming her production company ‘Edith’s Daughter’ after her.
