Well, well, well, here we are again, folks! Minnesota’s lawmakers are at it, and this time, they’ve got their eyes on the suspicious little machines that seem to be multiplying like rabbits-crypto ATMs! The state is seriously considering a proposal that would pull the plug on Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrency kiosks across the state. Why, you ask? Because these nifty machines are apparently playing a not-so-nice role in the world of scams. Who knew, right?
According to a thrilling report from CBS, the Minnesota House Commerce Finance and Policy Committee had a little sit-down last Thursday to discuss this burning issue. DFL Rep. Erin Koegel, the committee’s co-chair, brought House File 3642 to the table. If passed, this legislation would send those Bitcoin ATMs packing! Yes, you read that right. No more popping coins into a kiosk for some fast and ‘easy’ crypto trading.
Crypto ATMs: Scam Central?
Now, don’t be too quick to assume everyone’s on board with this move. Lawmakers and law enforcement alike seem to think these machines are not just cashing in on your hard-earned dough but are also super effective tools for scammers. Rep. Koegel shared that law enforcement has been warning people-again and again-that these kiosks are prime targets for those who want to swindle you out of your money. Aren’t they just the gift that keeps on giving?
And it’s not just politicians talking. Detective Lynn Lawrence from the Woodbury Public Safety Department made it crystal clear: scammers love these machines. “These machines remain one of the most effective tools that scammers are continuing to use to steal money,” he said. Steal money, you ask? Oh, absolutely, and apparently they’re not shy about it!
And then, there’s the case that Sgt. Jake Lanz from the St. Cloud Police Department shared. Picture this: an elderly woman, trusting as can be, handed over a whopping $80,000 through one of these kiosks. And, just so you know, the elderly are apparently the top target. It’s like a crimewave aimed directly at our most vulnerable. What a lovely world we live in!
“It’s definitely a target of our aging population,” Lanz said, making the point that once you’ve dropped your hard-earned cash into one of these machines, it’s gone, whisked away faster than you can say “crypto scam.” And good luck getting it back. Funds are transferred so quickly and often sent overseas, meaning the chances of recovery? Slim to none.
CoinFlip: Not a Fan of the Ban
Not everyone thinks banning crypto kiosks is a grand idea. Oh no, some are very unhappy about it. Take CoinFlip, for example. They’re out there defending these crypto kiosks like they’re the golden child of the financial world. In a statement to WCCO, they argued that just like your traditional bank needs physical branches and ATMs, crypto needs a physical touchpoint too. Sigh… Really? You need a machine to access your Bitcoin? Couldn’t you just… use your phone or, I don’t know, a computer?
CoinFlip’s spokesperson said crypto kiosks are not just a gimmick. They’re a “practical bridge between physical cash and digital assets.” Because, as we all know, bridging the gap between cash and cryptos definitely requires a machine that looks like it belongs in a casino. They claim these kiosks give people a way to interact with cryptocurrencies, but at what cost? Your savings?
And as for transparency and consumer protection? CoinFlip insists they’ve got it covered. They’re all about the rules and compliance. The spokesperson even promised they’d be happy to work with lawmakers to “strengthen protections against bad actors” while keeping the kiosks open. Because nothing says ‘trustworthy’ like a company whose machines are being used to drain grandma’s bank account.
