Cillian Murphy has firmly denied rumors that he’ll be playing Lord Voldemort in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series. The Oppenheimer star, who recently won an Oscar, stated he has no interest in taking on the role made famous by Ralph Fiennes.
In an interview with The Times, Murphy jokingly asked if his denial could be the main story, emphasizing he is “categorically not” involved. He discussed how quickly online rumors spread and how he feels about fame.
Murphy described himself as a regular person who isn’t comfortable with the celebrity lifestyle and finds the constant attention overwhelming.
This isn’t the first time Cillian Murphy has been asked about the possibility of playing Voldemort. He’s mentioned before, in a podcast interview, that his kids sometimes show him online rumors about it, but there’s never been any serious talk about it.
Murphy has always spoken highly of Ralph Fiennes, calling him a phenomenal actor, and acknowledged that taking on a role Fiennes played would be incredibly difficult. However, Fiennes himself publicly supported the idea of Murphy as Voldemort in a 2024 interview, saying he would fully support the casting.
Even though Cillian Murphy isn’t taking the part, the casting of the next Voldemort remains a big secret. According to Redanian Intelligence, an actor has been chosen and will appear in multiple episodes. HBO is keeping the actor’s identity under wraps, probably until the show premieres in 2027. Some sources also suggested Murphy was considered for the role of Professor Quirrell, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
Cillian Murphy, known for his work in the wizarding world, is soon returning to his iconic role in the film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. It will be shown in some cinemas on March 6th, and then released on Netflix on March 20th. Directed by Tom Harper, the film is set during World War II and also stars Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson, and Tim Roth. In addition to this, Murphy has been both producing and starring in Blood Runs Coal, a historical drama about a labor union, where he plays a lawyer fighting for justice for his father.
Fans who enjoyed his earlier films are excited about his role in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the follow-up to his popular movie 28 Days Later. The film, directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, will likely show the lasting effects of the virus outbreak. Despite being 49, the actor continues to be very busy in Hollywood, both acting and producing, though he generally prefers a private life when he’s not working.
