Following disappointing box office numbers for the movie “Christy,” boxer Christy Martin publicly voiced her support for actress Sydney Sweeney, who played her in the film.
The movie, based on the true story of boxer Martin’s career and the 2010 attack by her husband and former coach, earned just $1.3 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. – a very low number for a film playing in over 2,000 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.
Even though the movie didn’t do well, Martin publicly praised Sydney Sweeney in a touching Instagram post. He wrote, “I’ve always been a fighter, and that’s been true throughout my life. Now, I fight for others. I’ve noticed some people attacking my friend, Sydney Sweeney, and I want to be clear: Syd worked incredibly hard on this film, not just for the movie itself, but for my story, and for everyone else who is quietly struggling. She’s a true friend and someone who supports me!”

Sweeney shared her pride in the film, highlighting its potential to make a real difference, not just achieve high viewership. She stated, “I’m proud of the film David created, the story we shared, and the opportunity to portray someone as strong and determined as Christy Martin.”
Being a part of this film has been a true honor. It’s a story about overcoming hardship with bravery and finding hope, and we’ve been able to shine a light on the important issue of domestic violence. We all joined this project believing Christy’s story had the power to make a real difference and even save lives.
She expressed her gratitude to everyone who connected with the story, both now and in the future. She shared that if the story gave even one woman the strength to begin her journey to safety, they would consider it a success. She felt proud because they aimed to create work that makes a difference, not just attracts viewers, and this project, centered around Christy, had been the most meaningful of her career. She ended with a heartfelt message of love and thanks to Christy.
Directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, the film features Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman in supporting roles. It debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5th as part of the Special Presentations program and garnered generally positive feedback, with many critics highlighting a strong performance by the lead actor, Jacob Elordi.
Despite some criticism and disappointment from people like Ruby Rose, who previously played Batwoman, the commitment of those involved, like Sweeney, and the backing from Martin, demonstrate how meaningful this story is to both them and the wider community.
