Christopher Nolan will return to directing in 2026 with a potentially groundbreaking new film.
Christopher Nolan’s latest movie, The Odyssey, is based on the classic Greek story of the same name and will be a large-scale adventure taking place across the seas. Universal Pictures revealed the film in December 2024, explaining it’s Nolan’s next project after Oppenheimer.
Nolan revealed that they filmed over two million feet of footage for the project, with the majority of it shot at sea.
He told Empire that filming felt very raw and fundamental. The actors were put in genuinely challenging ocean conditions, in real locations, to convey the awe-inspiring and sometimes frightening power of the sea. They aimed to realistically portray the difficulties early explorers faced and the courage it took to venture into the unknown.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, in a film about his epic journey home following the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway plays his wife, Penelope, and the movie features a stellar cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.
Universal Pictures says Christopher Nolan started working on the script in early 2024 and officially greenlit the project later that same year. From February to August, filming took place in various stunning locations around the world, including Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland, Scotland, and Western Sahara. With a reported budget of around $250 million, this is Nolan’s most expensive film to date. Notably, it’s also the first movie he’s filmed entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras.
