A recent documentary disclosed that Chevy Chase experienced heart failure during the pandemic and was in a coma for approximately eight days. The 82-year-old comedian was hospitalized for five weeks in 2021 with heart problems, but the severity of the situation hadn’t been publicly known until now.
Chevy Chase miraculously recovered from a life-threatening heart failure, according to his daughter, Caley Chase, in the CNN documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, which debuted on January 1st.
Chase’s wife, Jayni, described how worried she was, explaining that Chase couldn’t tell her what was wrong, so they went to the emergency room. There, his heart stopped. She explained that years of drinking had caused a condition called cardiomyopathy, which weakens the heart muscle and makes it harder to pump blood. Cardiomyopathy is a serious condition that can ultimately lead to heart failure.
Peter Aaron, a close friend of Chase, explained that doctors put Chase into a medically induced coma for about eight days, which is very hard on the body.
Caley described the frightening experience for her family. She recalled the doctor telling them, “We might not get him back, and even if he recovers, we don’t know what his condition will be. You need to prepare for the worst.” When her father woke up, Caley said, he could only speak, and she imitated the confused sounds he made.
Even though Caley’s father was in a coma, she realized he was starting to act like himself again when a nurse came to adjust his medical equipment. Caley remembered the nurse saying, ‘I’m going to have to put this in here,’ and her father jokingly responding, ‘That’s what she said.’
Aaron explained that Chase needed time to adjust after the incident. Chase faced some thinking and memory difficulties, and he helped his recovery by playing games like cards and chess. As Chase described it, doctors had warned him his memory would be affected, and that’s exactly what happened.
In a recent documentary, Chase revealed he sometimes has trouble recalling past events, like disagreements that happened while working on Saturday Night Live and Community. He explained that he’s doing well now after experiencing heart failure, but doctors have told him it can affect his memory, so he occasionally needs reminders about things.
Chase recently shared his disappointment about not being included in the 50th anniversary celebration of Saturday Night Live. He admitted it bothered him, explaining that he thought he’d be asked to appear on stage with the other former cast members. He noticed Garrett Morris and Laraine Newman were included and wondered why he wasn’t, adding that no one ever reached out to him about it.
He recalled mentioning the issue once in a text message to Lorne Michaels, but then quickly retracting it, jokingly calling himself “silly.” However, he insisted it wasn’t a laughing matter, stating someone had clearly made an error. He felt strongly that he should have been included and admitted it was upsetting.
The documentary thoroughly explores Chase’s battle with illness, his journey to get better, and the difficulties he faced with memory loss following a major health crisis.
