Chappell Roan makes surprising statement about her popularity

Chappell Roan follows her own desires, especially when it comes to her mental wellness. If she feels her mental health isn’t at the desired level to continue a tour, she won’t do so. Furthermore, she refuses to be dictated by others regarding the direction of her music or what she should do. Essentially, she calls the shots, which is unusual for a 26-year-old musician starting their career.

Roan has been involved in music for about ten years now, and she initially gained attention by sharing her content on YouTube. Her following grew from posting covers of songs and the occasional original piece. In 2020, she put out several singles while signed to Atlantic Records, but the label eventually parted ways with her due to some moderate sales decline.

One can assume that Atlantic regrets the move now.

Chappell Roan refuses to censor herself

Roan didn’t put out a full-length LP until 2023 when she dropped “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” on Amusement Records. This album has sold over a million copies and peaked at number two on the Billboard album charts, reaching number one in the UK. Additionally, it spawned more than seven singles, among them “Hot to Go!

At the upcoming Grammy Awards next month, she has been nominated for six different categories. Among these are Best New Artist (despite Roan not being entirely new to the scene), Record of the Year (“Good Luck, Babe!”), and Album of the Year. However, she has also found herself in a bit of a stir.

At the 2024 MTV Awards, Roan had an argument with a pushy photographer whom she felt was being overly aggressive. Moreover, she’s expressed concerns about certain fans who seem to be harassing her parents. In a recent interview with BBC, however, Roan made it clear that she won’t self-censor. In fact, she thinks her fame could grow further if she were comfortable living a more restrained life, likening this hypothetical situation to wearing a muzzle.

Roan expressed, “I believe I’d achieve even greater success if I could accept wearing a muzzle…This would make me more prominent. Regardless, I’d still be on tour today…If I can reflect and say, ‘I didn’t succumb to the pressure of expectations, and I refused to tolerate abuse or manipulation,’ then at least I remained loyal to my convictions.

Absolutely, it’s likely that many fans would rather see Roan express her unique personality freely. Being a distinctive artist, she has a distinct style that sets her apart. If she suppresses herself, she risks blending in with other pop stars, which can become monotonous. However, Chappell Roan is far from ordinary and will undoubtedly continue to keep things interesting.
