Simone Ledward-Boseman, Chadwick Boseman’s wife, recently shared heartfelt details about their life together while he was becoming a successful actor. In an interview on the Today show on March 20th, she discussed the private battle with illness he began facing after his diagnosis in 2016, speaking with host Craig Melvin about the challenges they faced.
Simone became emotional when talking about 2018, calling it a year filled with incredible happiness that’s still hard to put into words. “It was a beautiful year,” she said, tears welling up. She explained that thinking about happy memories can sometimes be more powerful—and more painful—than remembering difficult times.
The couple married privately in 2020, but their lives changed dramatically when the movie Black Panther became a worldwide hit in February 2018. Simone explained that the film’s huge, global impact was almost impossible to put into words.
She fondly remembered seeing children dressed as her husband’s character, and how the whole community worked together to make sure students could see his film. “He truly deserved all the success he achieved,” she said. “Seeing kids dressing up like him, and people filling theaters – even bringing school groups – to watch the film, and witnessing him celebrated everywhere we went was incredible.”
When the film came out, people celebrated its release without realizing the actor had just received good news about his health. Simone shared, “It felt like they didn’t know we were also celebrating a clear medical scan – like we’d been given a second chance.”
Despite initial hope, the illness returned the following year, and he sadly passed away in August 2020. Throughout his four-year struggle with colon cancer, Chadwick Boseman kept his diagnosis private, a choice his wife says was intentional, allowing him to concentrate on his work and purpose.
Simone recalled how hopeful they both were at the beginning, even though the diagnosis was frightening. “We truly believed he would pull through,” she explained, adding that they saw it as a challenge he would ultimately overcome.
Simone explained that her husband preferred people focus on his life’s work and how he lived it, rather than his illness. “Let his dedication to his passions be what people remember,” she said in the interview.
Even after his passing in March, Chadwick Boseman’s impact on entertainment and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still strongly felt. Though the franchise has continued with ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ his performance as T’Challa is still considered the defining portrayal of the character and remains central to that part of the series.
Marvel Studios is currently focused on releasing ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027. The film is anticipated to draw inspiration from the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, fans are still enjoying the late Chadwick Boseman’s final role, which wrapped up recently with the conclusion of the ‘What If…?’ series on Disney+.
As a big film fan, I’ve been really touched by how Simone Ledward-Boseman has channeled her energy this year into the Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts. It’s amazing to see them offering new scholarships to students at Howard University. Beyond that, she’s also been a powerful voice for colon cancer awareness, and rightly so – she’s really stressing how important it is for younger people to get screened. It’s inspiring to see her carry on Chadwick’s legacy in such meaningful ways.
The actor’s impressive body of work, especially his acclaimed performances as Jackie Robinson and James Brown, is still used in film schools and remains popular in historical dramas. His last on-screen role in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ is often mentioned by aspiring actors as a prime example of captivating screen presence and commitment to the craft.
The recent segment on Today highlighted the resilience it takes to live in the public eye while dealing with personal struggles. As Simone explained, while the pain of losing her husband remains, it has eased somewhat over the six years since he died.
