The 2021 Pokémon World Championships were truly remarkable, filled with numerous announcements. The main focus of the event was Mega Evolution, which is making a comeback in an upcoming game called Pokémon Legends: ZA. As a result, different aspects of the Pokémon universe are integrating Mega Evolution in various ways. During the closing ceremony, several announcements were made that featured Mega Evolution. For instance, there’s a new game mode coming to Pokémon Legends: ZA, new cards for the digital Pokémon TCG Pocket, and a new card rarity for the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game. However, the most significant announcement was the transformation of the Pokémon World Championships – a full-fledged fan event is set to take place in San Francisco next year (details to follow).
Mega Evolution’s Place in Pokémon Games
In the world of Pokemon, Mega Evolution was initially presented in Pokemon X & Y as a groundbreaking feature that introduced the concept of “battle enhancements” for the series. Essentially, this allowed certain Pokemon to undergo a temporary transformation, providing them with new shapes, abilities, and boosted stats. Although it has been phased out in some previous games, the excitement is building up as the franchise once again embraces Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: ZA.
The Z-A Battle Club: A Multiplayer Mode
Despite the previous Pokémon Legends game being solo-oriented, the Pokémon World Championships unveiled a novel multiplayer mode called the Z-A Battle Club. This new gaming experience is a four-player battle royale, incorporating the game’s innovative real-time combat system, enabling instant attacks and dodges. The Z-A Battle Club introduces matches lasting three minutes, where players can Mega Evolve to intensify their strategies. If a Pokémon falls in combat, players resume at the sidelines with their creatures fully restored, ready to rejoin the fray or swap for another team member.
New Card Game Updates Elevate Games to Another Level
In two of its card games, Pokemon has made substantial updates associated with Mega Evolution. Previously, it was announced that Mega Evolution would return to the Pokemon Trading Card Game (PTCG), through Mega Pokemon EX cards. However, Pokemon World later disclosed that these cards would also have a new type of alternate art cards. The Mega Attack Rare cards showcase brand-new comic book-style artwork. Notably, this Japanese text is included to evoke the classic Mega Evolution cards from the XY period. Of course, one of the most exciting aspects of the upcoming Pokemon card era are the new Mega Charizard cards, which are likely to be highly sought-after by collectors.
Mega Evolved Pokémon Are Coming to TCG Pocket
Beyond this, the Pokémon TCG Pocket team has shared plans to incorporate Mega Evolved Pokémon into the gaming experience, following suit with the traditional card game. These novel cards are slated to be rolled out around Pokémon Legends: ZA , debuting as part of a fresh “season.” Akin to their physical counterparts, defeating a Mega Evolved Pokémon card in this game will yield three points, effectively securing the win. Preliminary trailers suggest that these Mega Evolved cards could be the most powerful we’ve seen within the game thus far.
Pokémon Champions Game Is in for VGC Competitions in 2026
For enthusiasts of competitive Pokémon gaming, the upcoming year signifies a fresh chapter. The Pokémon Company has announced that VGC competitions at next year’s World Championships will feature “Pokémon Champions” rather than “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.” This new game introduces the Omni Band, an item that facilitates Mega Evolution as well as Terastallizing and Dynamaxing Pokémon or allowing them to perform a Z-Move. Essentially, the Omni Band brings all battle features into play for future VGC competitions, potentially broadening the strategic possibilities of these intricate games in the years ahead.
An Extra Point to Note: Apart from Mega Evolution-related news, the smaller game titled Pokémon Unite is expanding its collection of Pokémon with three new Water-type characters. The beloved Vaporeon is among them, along with Empoleon and Dhelmise. Although Dhelmise, a ghostly anchor, might seem unexpected, it fits with the pattern seen in Pokémon Unite, which often introduces less prominent Pokémon in unique ways.
Pokémon World Championships Will Add Fan Event in 2026
Next year, the significant, albeit uncertain news is that the Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco will be coupled with a PokémonXP fan event. Given its global popularity, it’s surprising how quiet Pokémon has been regarding fan gatherings, with only the competitive Pokémon World Championships providing many opportunities for enthusiasts to connect. However, recognizing this gap, the Pokémon World Championships have been progressively organizing more events purely for fans, such as craft stalls and large-scale drone displays held at night.
This upcoming Pokémon XP event seems poised to break records as the largest Pokémon gathering ever, offering panels, workshops, and unique “fan interactions” for participants to engage with. The specifics about Pokémon XP remain unclear, but this represents a significant stride for the Pokémon franchise, providing a central location where fans can unite. In essence, Pokémon XP appears to be a major evolution in the fan experiences at the Pokémon World Championships, expanding brief enjoyable moments into an extensive multi-day fan experience.
Despite no fresh revelations about new Pokémon or Mega Evolutions during the 2021 Pokémon World Championships, the excitement surrounding the Pokémon franchise remains high, particularly among Mega Evolution enthusiasts. With a new game on the horizon this year, the Pokémon universe appears to be buzzing with activity. The intriguing question remains as to whether Mega Evolution will continue its significant presence in the franchise for several more years or if it’s just a temporary trend to keep fans engaged until the games marking the franchise’s 30th anniversary are released.
