Following months of rumors, Sony Pictures has officially announced the actors who will portray the wives of the Beatles in Sam Mendes‘ upcoming four-part movie series, The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event.
This project will feature a dedicated film for each member of The Beatles, sharing their individual stories. It’s the first time the band and Apple Corps Ltd. have authorized the use of their lives and music in scripted movies.
The film’s cast has been announced, featuring Mia McKenna-Bruce, Saoirse Ronan, Anna Sawai, and Aimee Lou Wood. Each actress will portray a woman who significantly impacted the lives of the band members.
The upcoming film will feature McKenna-Bruce as Ringo Starr’s first wife, Maureen Cox Starkey, while Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Paul McCartney’s first wife. Sawai will portray Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s partner, and Wood will take on the role of Pattie Boyd, George Harrison’s first wife.
I was so excited to hear what director Sam Mendes had to say about the incredible women joining the cast! He shared that Maureen, Linda, Yoko, and Pattie are all such interesting and individual personalities, and he’s absolutely thrilled to have convinced four of today’s most talented actresses to be a part of this project. It really sounds like it’s going to be something special!
All four actresses are highly accomplished. Leah McKenna-Bruce, for example, received a BAFTA Rising Star Award and a British Independent Film Award for her work in How to Have S.
Timothée Chalamet, a remarkably young actor with four Oscar nominations, is celebrated for his performances in films like Lady Bird, Little Women, and Brooklyn. Anna Sawai gained widespread recognition and awards—including an Emmy and Golden Globe—for her leading role in the FX series Shōgun. Emma Wood became well-known through Sex Education and recently earned an Emmy nomination for her work on The White Lotus.
The new films will feature Paul Mescal playing Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon. Each film will focus on the life of one Beatle, giving audiences a fresh look at how the band achieved fame, the dynamics between its members, and its lasting influence on culture. Ron Howard will direct all four movies, and the screenplays are by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne.
The films, a project from Neal Street Productions (led by Mendes) along with Sony Pictures and Apple Corps, are scheduled for release in April 2028. Sony Pictures will fund the production and handle distribution.
