Cancel Culture? Denzel Washington Says He’s Not Interested: “You Can’t Be Canceled If You Haven’t Signed Up”

I don’t understand what ‘being cancelled’ means“.

When Jillian Hardeman-Webb clarified that it implies a decrease in popular approval, Washington nonchalantly dismissed the notion, responding, “So what?” He further questioned, “Why was public backing considered crucial from the outset?

Hardeman-Webb pointed out that followers are as important as money today, and Washington used this to express his personal values. “I don’t care about who is following whom,” he stated. “Leading and following cannot occur simultaneously, and vice versa. I do not follow anyone. I follow a higher spiritual guidance. I follow God; I do not follow human beings. I believe in God; I have faith in humanity, but as you can see, things aren’t going so smoothly.

He expanded his thoughts on the concept of cancel culture: ‘One cannot be cancelled if they haven’t agreed to participate. So, don’t agree. Let’s not delve into it. Just thinking about it makes my heart ache a bit. You know, I feel a tightness in my chest discussing this topic.’

This statement follows his recent remarks that he doesn’t place much importance on the Oscars. In an interview with Jake’s Takes, he shared, “I don’t pay much attention to such things. I’ve been in this game for a while now, and there were times when I should have won but didn’t, and others where I shouldn’t have won but did. People give the awards, God gives the true recognition… People often ask me where I keep them, and my response is that they are placed alongside the other ones. I’m not boasting; I’m simply sharing my feelings about it. On my last day, Oscars won’t be of any help to me at all.

Washington’s remarks indicate that he values fan recognition and accolades less than following his personal journey, which is driven by his faith. He is not swayed by the stress or opinions that arise from the culture of public criticism (cancel culture).
