As someone who grew up in the era of East Coast hip-hop wars and witnessed Cam’ron’s feud with Jay-Z unfold, it’s fascinating to see their relationship evolve over the years. However, as a fan of both artists, I must admit that I was rooting for Lil Wayne to perform at Super Bowl LIX in his hometown of New Orleans.
At one point, Cam’ron was seen as Jay-Z’s adversary, but they managed to resolve their differences several years down the line. A clear indication of this reconciliation is when Cam’ron appeared on stage with Jay during his “B-Sides 2” concert at New York’s Webster Hall in 2019.
However, Cam continues to voice his criticism towards the Brooklyn rapper, following the news that Roc Nation selected Kendrick Lamar for the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show. In his opinion, Lil Wayne, being a native of New Orleans where Super Bowl LIX will be held, would have been a more fitting choice.
In his “It Is What It Is” podcast, Cam expressed his strong feelings about Kendrick Lamar and the song “Pop Out”. He considers Kendrick Lamar as one of the greatest artists of this generation. However, he finds the choice for a performer at the Super Bowl disappointing, especially since Lil Wayne, who is from New Orleans, wasn’t selected. Cam believes it’s unjustified that Lil Wayne wasn’t chosen to perform in New Orleans during the Super Bowl, and he feels strongly that this needs to change.
“It’s one person who’s stopping this. It’s not really a secret,” he continued, suggesting it’s Jay-Z. “Lil Wayne had a problem with somebody before who’s kinda part of the organization running it. This is payback. Who’s Lil Wayne’s artist? Drake. This is crazy, bro. It’s ridiculous.”
It’s quite straightforward to find flaws in Cam’ron’s theory, as while there was indeed rivalry between Jay and Wayne over the years, it primarily stemmed from competition. Time and again, Wayne has declared Jay-Z as his favorite rapper, and Jay-Z has consistently praised Weezy. In fact, Jay-Z attempted to sign Wayne years ago, but Birdman vetoed the deal. Furthermore, Jay-Z once provided Wayne with money to settle an $8 million tax debt.
Instead, Cam’s fellow host Ma$e is not troubled by Jay-Z selecting Kendrick for the Super Bowl performance, viewing it as a fantastic chance for Kendrick to expose his Pop Out show to a wider audience. Mase was discussing how Kendrick enabled several aspiring artists to perform at his Pop Out event on Juneteenth, and in doing so, managed to bring together numerous gang members within the city.
