BYD and DJI Reveal Roof-Mounted Drone System

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that BYD has teamed up with DJI, the masterminds behind drones, to create something straight out of a sci-fi dream – a car rooftop drone launch system! This innovative feature, named Lingyuan, allows for smooth aerial videography on the go. Excitingly, it’s now accessible in China for approximately ¥16,000 CNY, which is around $2,200 USD. Can’t wait to get my hands on this!

The device called “Spirit Kite” is located inside a compact, 30cm-square box on top of the car. By pressing a button on the touchscreen, two doors slide open, unveiling a platform for launching drones even when the vehicle is moving. This system is designed to work at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour, enabling the drone to lift off, follow the car, and return safely to its dock.

Through technology, BYD and DJI are striving to convert automobiles into “moving entertainment and discovery stations” by offering a vertical perspective that records travel experiences in real-time. The drone sends the footage straight to the car’s main display, enabling drivers and passengers to record, pause, and share their trip.

This advanced integration represents a notable advancement in automotive and drone technology, empowering drivers to produce high-quality travel content. Featuring autonomous redocking and touchscreen management, BYD and DJI are working towards reshaping how we document and enjoy road journeys. As of now, the Lingyuan system is only accessible in the Chinese market.
