Braun & NEIGHBORHOOD Reproduce Retro Clock Designs From the 1980s

Summary

  • Set for release of June 7, NEIGHBORHOOD and German electronics manufacturer Braun are reproducing an alarm clock and a wall clock originally designed in the 1980s.

As a gaming enthusiast, I recently got excited about the unique partnership between Shinsuke Takizawa’s NEIGHBORHOOD and iconic German electronics brand Braun. This collaboration introduced a special limited-edition collection, consisting of a wall clock and an alarm clock inspired by timeless designs from the ’80s.

The assortment features replicas of two distinct models, each adorned with a joint logo from both brands. The BC02 resembles the AB1 miniature alarm clock, which was introduced in 1987, and the BC06 is modeled after the ABW30 wall clock from 1981, a piece that’s part of MoMA’s permanent collection. Both clocks display a 24-hour Arabic numeral index along with the standard 12-hour markings, reflecting their military watch design influences. The clocks are available in minimalist black and white plastic versions, embodying Braun’s signature streamlined aesthetic.

Established in 1921 and deeply influenced by the Bauhaus design philosophy, Braun has a rich history in electronic design that extends over a century. However, some of its most cherished designs are credited to Dieter Rams during the latter part of the 20th century. The clocks within the NEIGHBORHOOD collection draw inspiration from models conceived by Rams during his tenure at the company, starting from 1955 and continuing until 1997.

Through collaborations such as reimagining Columbia’s GP3 turntable in 2024 and revealing a mini tape player/boombox in April, Neighbourhood isn’t new to the electronics scene. Given their longstanding appreciation for vintage technology, Shinsuke Takizawa is expanding Neighborhood’s horizons with this latest collaboration.

The Braun x NEIGHBORHOOD clock line will be available starting June 7 exclusively on the NEIGHBORHOOD’s official online store.
