Throughout Hollywood’s history, many roles almost went to Black actors before ultimately being cast with white stars. These decisions were often based on things like conflicting schedules, concerns about the script, or simply a feeling from those in charge. These choices had a significant impact on both the movies themselves and the careers of the actors involved, though audiences are usually unaware of how close things were to being different. Here are some well-known examples of Black actors who were offered or seriously considered for roles that eventually went to white actors.
Will Smith – ‘The Matrix’ (1999)

Will Smith was offered the lead role in The Matrix and discussed the project with the directors. However, he decided it wasn’t right for him, feeling unsure about the complex story and groundbreaking visual effects. Keanu Reeves then took the part, and his performance ultimately defined the film’s unique feel and look. Smith later admitted he pursued other opportunities and recognized Reeves’s portrayal as the definitive one.
Denzel Washington – ‘Se7en’ (1995)

Denzel Washington was initially offered a detective role, but he turned it down after reading an early draft of the script, finding the story too grim. Brad Pitt ended up taking the part, and the filmmakers maintained the dark conclusion, which became a defining feature of the movie. Washington later admitted that seeing the finished film made him reconsider his initial reaction to the project.
Denzel Washington – ‘Michael Clayton’ (2007)

Denzel Washington was originally considered for the lead role in this legal thriller before George Clooney took the part. Washington decided against it because he wasn’t happy with how the script was developing. The film ultimately starred Clooney and received several Oscar nominations, winning one award for a supporting actor. Washington later explained that the story didn’t feel fully developed when he was offered the role.
Halle Berry – ‘Speed’ (1994)

Halle Berry was initially considered for the lead role in the movie, and she read an early version of the script that featured a scene set at an airport. She decided not to take the part, and Sandra Bullock was cast instead. This role ultimately launched Bullock’s career to new heights. Berry later explained that she wasn’t drawn to the airport storyline, as the final movie became famous for its thrilling plot involving a runaway bus.
Eddie Murphy – ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ (1988)

During the early stages of production, Eddie Murphy was considered for the role of detective Eddie Valiant. However, he turned it down because the idea of combining live actors with animation seemed risky before anyone had seen it work. Bob Hoskins ultimately took the part, and the film became famous for its innovative use of both live action and animation. Murphy later said he wished he hadn’t passed on the opportunity after seeing how successfully the unique style was executed.
Eddie Murphy – ‘Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’ (1986)

Eddie Murphy was considered for a significant role, as the studio hoped to boost the film’s success with his popularity. However, he decided to work on a different comedy project instead. The filmmakers then changed the role and added a new character to the story, which was set on modern-day Earth. Ultimately, Catherine Hicks played a crucial civilian who helped the crew of the Enterprise.
Sidney Poitier – ‘Dirty Harry’ (1971)

Early on, producers offered the part of the rebellious police officer to Sidney Poitier, among other actors. He turned it down, and the script went through many revisions. Clint Eastwood eventually took on the role, and his performance defined the look and feel of the entire series. As the story and villain were finalized, the character’s personality was further developed during filming.
Angela Bassett – ‘Killer Joe’ (2011)

Filmmakers initially wanted Angela Bassett for the role of the mother figure, but she decided not to take the part after reading the script. The story was evolving towards a more intense and realistic style, and Gina Gershon was eventually cast after further changes were made to highlight this grittier tone. The final film kept the classic, dark elements of film noir but adjusted how the characters interacted.
