As a long-time fan of Smashing Pumpkins, I completely understand Billy Corgan’s stance on refusing to be pressured into performing classic hits. Having grown up with their music, I’ve lived through the band’s iconic era and have developed a deep connection to their songs. However, I also appreciate Corgan’s commitment to artistic integrity and creative control.
According to Loudwire, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins is unwilling to be forced into playing their well-known hits. In an interview with Kerrang, the lead singer expressed his disagreement with the idea that the band needs to perform these popular songs just to please fans. What could be the reason behind his stance?
While some may find it uncomfortable, artists often have the right to control their creative process. This was something Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides experienced in the past when working with record labels. He acknowledged that there were instances where his songs were remixed against his will and ideas were discarded. These experiences were frustrating for him, especially since their fans have supported them for so long that they now have the freedom to create without interference or suggestions to alter their original concepts.
In my experience as a fan, handing over creative control can sometimes lead to others seizing more than what was initially given. To illustrate this point, let me share how Billy Corgan expresses his stance: “I refuse to play songs I don’t feel connected to, regardless of their popularity or status.” He continues, “If a song doesn’t resonate with me, then it simply won’t make it into the setlist. I believe in delivering an authentic performance and not forcing a less-than-passionate rendition upon my audience. That would be disingenuous and, in my opinion, cheesy.”
The Smashing Pumpkins, established in 1988, emerged as one of the most prosperous and highly regarded bands during the 1990s. Their discography boasts popular tunes such as “1979,” “Tonight, Tonight,” and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.”
Billy Corgan wants to find balance between the old and the new
Although Corgan initially tasted triumph, he consistently prioritized artistic authenticity over financial gain. In our discussion, he shared his aversion to reminiscing about the past. “It’s a challenging concept to grasp unless you’ve experienced it firsthand,” he added.
I’ve been there before, standing on stage with the weight of expectations pressing down on me. It’s a classic dilemma – the devil on one shoulder whispering temptations, urging me to give in and please the crowd with an extra five songs they’re clamoring for. But as a seasoned artist, I know that’s not why I’m up here.
It’s not about warrning with fans…
Corgan understood that fans’ desire to hear beloved tunes isn’t unwelcome, but warned bands against being overly tied to their past. Such a stance could stifle artistic growth.
In his own words, he stressed that fans aren’t interested in an outdated performer. Instead, he underlined the significance of creating fresh music. He shared that it took him quite some time to grasp the importance of striking a balance between old and new tunes.
I’ve been to countless concerts throughout my life, each one holding a special place in my heart. Some shows leave me feeling elated and inspired, while others evoke memories of significant moments from my past. However, there’s a noticeable difference between the enthusiastic fan who appreciates the artistry and the artist themselves.
Instead of being shackled by the past or heritage, I stepped into the shoes of the audience to grasp their expectations. This shift in perspective helped me become more receptive and consider the possibility that my perspective might have been overly artistic.
In simpler terms, some musicians like Serj Tankian from System of a Down take brave actions, such as reducing touring extensively. On the other hand, Trent Reznor often speaks out against the music industry’s business aspects, which can excite audiences. It’s fascinating to observe where artists choose to set their limits and make compromises. Through these decisions, music history continues to unfold in real-time.
