As a devoted fan of both Big Sean and Kanye West, I find myself constantly captivated by their unique dynamic, which is as intriguing off-stage as it is on. Their collaboration story behind “Blessings” is an excellent example of how even the most successful artists can face unexpected twists in their creative processes.
When I first played Big Sean’s 2015 track “Blessings” for Kanye West, the reaction I got wasn’t exactly what I expected. It wasn’t that he disliked the song; quite the contrary, he loved it so much that he wanted to add his own verse to it.
Sean found himself reluctant about the decision since “Blessings” was the final track he included in his Dark Sky Paradise album, which had to be submitted. Moreover, Sean mentioned that Kanye West wasn’t too pleased with Drake being asked for the single instead of him.
In different words, during an interview with Complex, Sean recalled that Kanye West seemed to believe I chose Drake over him when we collaborated on the song ‘Blessings.’ However, Sean found this idea confusing and responded, “What are you talking about, buddy?” Sean explained that Kanye had played a significant role in his third album, ‘Dark Sky Paradise,’ by being featured multiple times on it.
‘Blessings’ turned out to be the final track added at the eleventh hour, and when he heard it, he exclaimed, ‘I need to be on this song!'” He went on. “But I responded, ‘Gosh, buddy, it’s already too late! The pre-order for my album goes live tomorrow!’

But in the end Sean gave in, because the GOOD Music founder signed him back in 2007.
The Detroit rapper stated that while things were different back then, he still contributed to completing a verse with his collaborator. Essentially, he wrote the verse alongside him, so he was ready to follow whatever instructions his partner gave. If the partner wanted to join the verse, they would work together on the details and sort out the practicalities later.
Last year, during an appearance on Drink Champs, I shared a tale that echoed Kanye’s sentiment about being heavily involved in my “Dark Sky Paradise” album and not really liking it. After Kanye graced Drink Champs with his presence, he mentioned to the hosts that signing me to GOOD Music was a decision he deeply regretted. If you’d like to hear more about “Blessings,” you can find our conversation at the 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 42 seconds mark in the interview below.
