In ‘When Agent Markets Arrive’, we introduce \diagon, a programmable market system designed to experimentally investigate the institutional foundations of emerging agent-based economies. Our findings demonstrate that market exchange can generate 3.2\times the wealth of self-sufficient agents, yet these gains are highly sensitive to design choices-interventions intended to improve performance, like increased transparency, can paradoxically degrade outcomes. What novel incentive structures and institutional designs are necessary to unlock the full potential of the agent era and avoid unforeseen market failures?

This transition necessitates the development of new frameworks for task allocation, incentivization, and value exchange – mirroring the complexities of human labor markets but operating at machine speed and scale. The implications extend beyond increased efficiency; it suggests a future where AI contributes directly to wealth creation, not just through automation, but through active participation as a dynamic force within the economy.

Diagon establishes a continuously evolving marketplace through principles of evolutionary selection, mirroring natural processes to optimize agent performance. Crucially, persistent operation and consistent interaction are maintained through the integration of tools like Claude Code, which enables agents to retain context, manage complex tasks, and adapt to evolving demands. This reliance on capable language models isn’t merely about processing power; it’s about establishing a framework for ongoing engagement, allowing agents to build upon past experiences and refine their performance over time, effectively creating a self-improving workforce within the simulation.
The autonomous agents within this evolving labor market aren’t simply programmed; they actively process information and adjust strategies using tools like OpenRouter and TextBlob to navigate fluctuating conditions. Analysis reveals that posterior models – those assessing agent performance – explain a substantial 55% of the variance in payment amounts, indicating a robust, albeit imperfect, evaluation system. However, significant disparities exist between different language model families powering these agents; some exhibit a concerning false dispute rate reaching 16.7%, suggesting a tendency to incorrectly claim payment for unsuccessful tasks. This contrasts sharply with the performance of GPT-based agents, which maintain a considerably lower false dispute rate of just 2.0%, highlighting the critical importance of model selection for reliable and trustworthy autonomous labor.
