In the heart of summer, the Moroccan rug brand, Beni, revealed its fresh Chroma 1 collection. This collection boasts eleven distinct designs, crafted using vibrant color schemes and subtle patterns.

Romain Laprade captured these photos on a bright day in New York’s Fire Island. The images were taken at a Pines Modern residence right by the shore, designed by Peter Asher between 1968 and 1969. The house’s unique blend of traditional wooden elements and modernistic design is similar to the Chroma I rugs. These rugs fuse ancient North African crafting methods with contemporary minimalism and vibrant colors, creating an expressive balance.

The color scheme, marked by bold contrasts and diverse stripes, originates from artist Ellsworth Kelly’s Spectrum of Colors Arranged by Chance. This collection is suggested as an exploration of how color influences our aesthetic sense, with earthy tones being combined with vibrant, sun-soaked hues such as red, orange, and yellow.

As a gamer diving into my latest project, I strive to uphold Ellsworth Kelly’s concept of spatial harmony by skillfully blending colors and elements together. The unique essence of this collection lies in its dynamic contrasts, which serve as the heartbeat that pulses through each design. Delving into how each hue complements or clashes with its neighbors, I find a rhythmic symphony unfolding before my eyes.

Despite having a Mid-Century aesthetic, influenced by the named inspirations, Chroma 1 is deeply connected to ancient Moroccan and North African craftsmanship. The Zahara style, characterized by simple flat-weave patterns, is meticulously woven using small knots, providing a lightweight texture that’s perfect for its Saharan origins due to its hot climate.
