Okay, so you guys know I have a soft spot for delightfully terrible movies, and the “Sharknado” series definitely fits that bill. Well, get this – The Asylum is bringing us another one! It’s a prequel called “Sharknado Origins,” and Variety is reporting it’s actually happening. Apparently, they’re going back to the beginning to show us how this whole shark-filled tornado mess started. Honestly, I’m already bracing myself for the glorious absurdity of it all, and I’m kind of excited!
Filming will begin later in 2024, and director Anthony Ferrante is back to direct. The movie is currently scheduled to come out in summer 2026, but details about the actors haven’t been announced yet.
“Sharknado Origins” is a new movie that shows how the sharknado phenomenon began. It tells the story of young Fin and April, the characters later played by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, as reported by Variety.
The story begins with a typical summer that quickly descends into chaos when a tornado filled with sharks unexpectedly hits, marking the start of the original Sharknado event.
The first “Sharknado” movie aired on Syfy on July 11, 2013, and immediately became a popular topic of conversation. Despite its small $1 million budget, this thrilling film featured a unique premise: a tornado filled with sharks attacking Los Angeles.
The movie’s strange story, combined with lots of attention on social media and appearances by famous faces like Olivia Newton-John, David Hasselhoff, and George R.R. Martin, unexpectedly made it a success.
The original “Sharknado” movie was so popular it spawned six sequels and three additional films. The second movie, “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” proved to be the most watched, attracting around 3.9 million viewers. The series continued with films like “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!”, “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens”, “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming”, and finally “The Last Sharknado” which was released in 2018.
If you loved the crazy, over-the-top action of the original ‘Sharknado,’ you’ll find the same fun and chaos in the new prequel. ‘Sharknado Origins’ tells the story of how the infamous tornado-shark disaster began, and aims to recapture the excitement that made the first movie so popular.
