Batman Beyond and Static Team Up Again for New Cyberpunk Series From DC Comics

In the autumn, two iconic animated DC heroes from the early 2000s are set to team up in the comic book series titled “Batman/Static: Beyond“. This is part of the DC Elseworlds imprint and will be penned by Evan Narcisse with illustrations by Nikolas Draper-Ivey. This story brings together Terry McGinnis, Batman of the future, and Virgil Hawkins, the adult Static from Dakota City. Together, they embark on a critical mission that could alter Earth’s position in the cosmos.

According to DC’s “Batman/Static: Beyond”, the series brings together two of DC’s most energetic superheroes – Terry McGinnis, the futuristic protector of Neo-Gotham, and Virgil Hawkins, the electrifying architect of Dakota City’s future – who are both famous for their successful animated debuts. They embark on a critical mission that has the potential to redefine Earth’s position in the universe.

In the first edition, Terry McGinnis roams the brightly lit cityscape of Neo-Gotham, while Virgil Hawkins initiates a technological overhaul by introducing the Q-Wave Energy Grid. As Earth gears up to join a formidable interstellar union known as the Cooperative, the Justice League Beyond stands poised to usher in an era of tranquility. However, when a shadowy enemy causes a worldwide power failure, the fate of the planet is uncertain. With technology failing and disorder increasing, Static and Batman Beyond join forces in an unexpected alliance to rescue the world before it’s too late. The planet’s future now depends on them taking practical action.

This development is reminiscent for “Justice League Unlimited” enthusiasts, as it was in that series where we first encountered the grown-up version of Static, through a time-travel episode. Writer Evan Narcisse expressed his delight with this upcoming series, particularly remembering the intriguing dynamic he established between Static and Batman in the “Milestone 30th Anniversary Special”, where these characters initially joined forces. What excites him most about this new project is delving into the distinct personalities of Terry and Virgil.

In his remarks, artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey mentioned that the story being told aims to critically examine our excessive reliance on technology and the potential risks of growing complacent when artificial intelligence replaces human ingenuity and imagination. He expressed concern that we now use devices like watches to locate phones, phones to access everything else, and rely on technology rather than memory for recalling information. This series seems to offer more than just a walk down memory lane.

The first issue of Batman/Static: Beyond arrives on November 1.

Over the course of six installments, this series is set to be published. A compiled version of the series is planned for release on August 4, 2026.
