As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts about the upcoming documentary, “Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything,” directed by Jackie Jesko. This compelling film traces the remarkable life and career of Barbara Walters, a groundbreaking journalist who opened doors for countless women in journalism decades before her passing in 2022. The documentary, which had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, will be available on Hulu starting next week.
Walters led a life that was both triumphant and poignantly sad, spending her early years nurturing her sister and later facing many challenges without her by her side. Delving deeper into her personal story reveals her complex relationship with her daughter, among other aspects. However, she is most renowned for her interview techniques, notably her ability to elicit intimate revelations from high-profile individuals that they had not shared with other journalists.
I spent time viewing numerous interviews conducted by Walter during my journalism studies. After her retirement from The View and TV in general, I read her memoir. I also caught the special programs detailing her career when they were broadcast as a tribute to her significant contributions to the industry in 2014 (shortly after my graduation, when I was still considering a similar path). This upcoming documentary is what primarily appeals to me.
Is there any fresh insight to be gained from examining such a renowned career, given that it was extensively explored 11 years ago? This question arises from my perspective as someone who hasn’t watched the documentary yet, but it’s a legitimate inquiry. The reason for its release now piques my curiosity. It’s reasonable to assume that a documentary about someone’s legacy wouldn’t be rushed out immediately following their demise. However, my primary concern is that we might not discover anything new, or that there won’t be any fresh perspectives on a legacy that has already been extensively celebrated and remains vivid in the memory of many.
Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything premieres on Hulu on June 23, 2025.
