The classic slasher movie formula – teenagers being stalked and killed by a masked villain – is as familiar as it is enduring. While some films cleverly play with or comment on this trope, most stick to it. And that’s often part of the appeal – there’s a certain comfort in knowing what to expect, even when it’s over-the-top and campy.
Even if we enjoy these stories, it’s important to realize that horror often harshly judges women, particularly those who break the rules. If a woman enjoys sex, lives outside of societal norms, or challenges traditional power structures, she’s often punished. However, in some cases, like with the characters we’re looking at here, these women become inspiring figures. In horror, sometimes those who are considered ‘bad’ girls are the most powerful and memorable.
These five horror movie characters, from films known for their over-the-top style, offer a fascinating look at gender representation. The colorful, funny, and daring nature of these ‘camp’ classics actually highlights these themes. Underneath the exaggerated violence and spectacle, there’s a surprisingly original and thought-provoking element – something that intense, dramatic horror uniquely brings out.
These women faced consequences for daring to want more, but ultimately found a twisted sort of reward through revenge. Watching their stories feels satisfying, like seeing justice served for anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider. Plus, their striking and memorable looks would make them fantastic Halloween costumes.
Jennifer Check – Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Let’s talk about a more recent cult favorite: Karyn Kusama’s *Jennifer’s Body*. The movie follows Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), a popular girl in a small town who is sacrificed by a rock band hoping to become famous. They mistakenly believe she’s a virgin, and the ritual goes wrong. Jennifer returns as a succubus, feeding on men. Once seen as just a sex symbol, she now uses her body and sexuality as a source of power.
The movie offers a sharp and insightful look into the complexities of being a woman, thanks to a witty script. It goes beyond simply portraying how women are seen by men, and instead explores the complicated dynamics of female friendship. Jennifer’s best friend, Needy, feels a mix of envy and concern, especially as Jennifer transforms, adding to the heartbreaking events that unfold. Eventually, Jennifer’s behavior spirals out of control, and Needy is forced to take drastic action to stop her.
The power dynamic has flipped: now a woman is taking control in a way that previously only men did. It’s almost as if she’s unintentionally upholding the old system and restoring order. This adds a layer of complexity that isn’t always present in these types of movies, and it’s a key reason why *Jennifer’s Body* remains a beloved cult film nearly 20 years after its release. Even though Jennifer dies, her influence and power continue to exist.

Angela Franklin – Night of the Demons (1988)
At the start of *Night of the Demons*, Angela Franklin, played by Amelia Kinkade, is a social outcast with a gothic style. When her Halloween party at an old mortuary includes a séance, everything goes terribly wrong, and Angela becomes possessed by a demon. This transforms her from an unnoticed loner into a frightening threat, perfectly representing the idea of a “monstrous woman.” While possessed, she becomes seductive and even commits shocking acts, like eating the tongues of men. She embraces her newfound power and revels in breaking all social rules.
The film *Night of the Demons* led to two follow-up movies, and Angela returns in both, sporting the same striking look: a black lace dress, messy hair, and a hauntingly beautiful, yet disfigured, face. This over-the-top style is a key part of the films’ appeal and makes her a memorable character. Throughout the series, her descent into villainy becomes legendary, but she always remains unapologetically evil and enjoys it immensely.

Regine Dandridge – Fright Night Part 2 (1988)
In *Fright Night Part 2*, Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) becomes intrigued when Regine Dandridge (Julie Carmen), the sister of the vampire from the first movie, comes to town seeking revenge. She captivates him with her dark style and alluring personality, successfully deceiving him until he realizes she doesn’t appear in mirrors – a clear sign she’s a vampire.
Regine’s unique ability is to turn things around, and she’s a dangerous mix of hunter and showman. She preys on Charley while also playing into men’s anxieties about being manipulated, especially through seduction. She uses their desires against them, and her vampirism is like a powerful feminist statement – she challenges the idea of innocence and makes it clear she won’t go down without a fight. (And, like any great villain, she has a loyal group of followers.)
Ultimately, Charley defeats Regine by trapping her in a coffin filled with communion wafers and exposing her to sunlight, which kills her. However, Regine remains a captivating figure in the story, remembered more for her compelling nature than for the hero’s righteousness. She demonstrates that even a character deemed ‘fallen’ can take control of the narrative, even if it means facing destruction.
Currently, you can’t rent or stream *Fright Night Part 2*, but a 4K UHD and Blu-ray version is planned for release in 2026, so keep an eye out for it!
Christine Brown – Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Sam Raimi’s 2009 horror film, *Drag Me to Hell*, stars Alison Lohman as Christine, a bank loan officer hoping for a promotion. Eager to prove herself, she refuses to grant an extension on a loan to an elderly woman, who then curses her. This sets off a terrifying series of increasingly disturbing supernatural events in Christine’s life.
Christine isn’t punished for wanting something forbidden, but for being ambitious. She’s essentially cursed for trying to succeed in a workplace controlled by men and refusing to be submissive. It feels like she’s being made to feel guilty for wanting power, as society often does with women. The terrifying visions – the bugs and shadowy figures – constantly remind her of the price she’s paying for wanting more, as if trying to force her to give up.
Sam Raimi expertly mixes comedy and horror to highlight how dire Christine’s situation becomes. Ultimately, the title proves true – Christine can’t break the curse and is pulled into hell. However, she isn’t punished for being wicked, but because the story’s world, which reflects patriarchal ideas, deems her deserving of such a fate.

Mary Lou Maloney – Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)
Okay, so this is a sequel to the original *Prom Night* from the 80s, but it flashes back to 1957. It centers around this really popular girl, Mary Lou Maloney, at her prom. Things take a *really* dark turn when she’s caught kissing someone other than her date. Her jilted boyfriend gets back at her by setting off a stink bomb right after she’s crowned prom queen. But it goes horribly wrong – the bomb actually catches her on fire, and she tragically burns to death onstage. It’s a pretty shocking scene, honestly!
Thirty years later, the spirit of Mary Lou returns, possessing a high school student named Vicki Carpenter. Driven by a desire for revenge, Mary Lou transforms Vicki’s personality and appearance. Vicki then carries out Mary Lou’s plan, targeting the now-principal she had an affair with and the man she cheated with, who is now a priest. She relentlessly pursues her vengeance, using seduction and manipulation to create chaos and enjoy the fallout.
Mary Lou’s journey to regain control is both entertaining and chaotic. What’s truly empowering is her refusal to let men stifle her dreams or silence her voice. The film reveals she’s even taken over the body of the man who killed her, proving that her spirit lives on. It’s a powerful message that those who judge others by a moral code they don’t follow themselves deserve to face consequences.
