Ayo Edebiri in Talks to Write, Star in Daniel Kaluuya’s Live-Action ‘Barney’ Film

Ayo Edebiri might join forces with Daniel Kaluuya, A24, and Mattel Films on the upcoming live-action _Barney_ movie.

According to Variety, the celebrated actress is engaged in talks about writing the script and appearing in the forthcoming film version. Additionally, it has been reported that Kaluuya himself will act as one of the lead producers through his 59% Productions, but he won’t be part of the movie’s cast.

24/59 Productions are teaming up to co-develop and produce “Barney” in collaboration with Mattel Films, the company that holds the intellectual property rights. Kevin McKeon, Andrew Scannell, Robbie Brenner (for Mattel Films), and Kaluuya and Rowan Riley (for 59% Productions) are all involved in supervising the movie’s production.

As of now, specific details about the eagerly anticipated project haven’t been disclosed yet. However, Mattel’s chief franchise officer Josh Silverman had earlier told Variety that the storyline will differ from Max’s recent animated reboot. He mentioned that they are working closely together and have spent a significant amount of time discussing this project with Robbie Brenner, who heads their film division. They aim to develop a coherent narrative for the ‘Barney’ movie, ensuring it stays true to its original essence while also being updated. If the revised version doesn’t align with the authentic Barney DNA, they won’t proceed. In other words, they want to maintain the original spirit of Barney but give it a fresh, modern twist.

Stay tuned for more info.
