Aussie B-Girl Raygun & CNN blasted by rap legend over breakdancing at Olympics

As someone who has spent years following the Olympics and appreciating the diverse talents showcased during this global event, I must admit that Rachael “Raygun” Gunn’s performance left me both surprised and intrigued. While it’s clear that her dance moves may not have been technically difficult enough to challenge some of her peers, there is no denying the creativity and originality she brought to the table.

It’s fair to assume that many people didn’t know Rachael “Raygun” Gunn before the Olympics started, but that changed recently. Gunn, an Australian B-girl, professor, and breakdancer who competed in the Olympics, has been criticized for her performance. This was mostly due to her using some extremely unconventional dance moves that seemed to lack complexity, leaving many puzzled.

After performing her daily routine, she became widely popular, prompting numerous people to create memes and make humorous comments, much like a five-year-old showing off a new trick for their audience. On X, formerly known as Twitter, someone wrote, “Just like my niece when she says ‘watch this!'” Another tweet read, “Will Australia ever get over this?”

After facing defeats from Syssy of France, Nicka of Lithuania, and Logistx of the USA, Gunn chose to defend her strategies amid criticism. She stated, as reported by ESPN, “I wasn’t planning on beating these girls at what they excel in, their powerful moves.” Instead, she emphasized, “My strength lies in creativity.”

As Australia’s Chef de Mission, I was disheartened to see the unfunny and inappropriate social media jokes that surfaced following Gunn’s performance.

At a recent press conference, Mearesat expressed her feelings by saying, “I adore Rachel, and it’s been truly disheartening to see social media filled with trolls and keyboard warriors, giving undue attention to their harmful comments. However, Raygun has always been an incredibly cherished part of this Olympic team. She embodies the Olympic values with incredible zeal.”

CNN commended Raygun, the Australian breaker, for her bravery following her impactful performances at the Paris Olympics, labeling her as courageous in their post on Instagram.

Soul singer India.Arie didn’t appreciate CNN’s post, responding with “Sigh… a form of art originated by young black and brown people in the Bronx has now become an Olympic event, and this poorly executed version of the art is being applauded instead.” She commented.
