Artek Adds Moomin Doodles to Signature Pieces for 90th Anniversary

To mark its 90th anniversary, renowned Finnish furniture brand Artek has collaborated with beloved comic character Moomin for a unique take on Alvar Aalto’s most recognized designs. Featuring artwork directly from the comic strips, these two iconic figures honor their shared Finnish roots and significant cultural impact worldwide.

Tove Jansson’s illustrations from her debut Moomin comic strip, titled “Mumintrollet och jordens undergång,” were first published in a Finnish newspaper back in 1947 on the Stool 60 and Cabinet 250. This initial publication marked the start of their journey. On the other hand, Alvar Aalto’s innovative stackable seating design, created as early as 1933, has stood the test of time and continues to be a cherished classic in modern times. Its enduring appeal is particularly noticeable today given the growing fascination among younger generations with Scandinavian Mid-Century designs.

In another setting, I come across the enchanting world of Moomin on the Cabinet 250 – a majestic, birch-hued “cocktail cabinet” reminiscent of a giant, sculpted from the same bent plywood legs as Artek’s iconic stool. Stepping inside, I find myself transported back to my childhood with nostalgic illustrations hidden within the warm, honey-stained doors.

In simpler terms, Artek’s design philosophy is about straightforward collaboration and a contemporary approach to visual style. Alvar Aalto, one of their designers, often used flowing shapes in his creations, such as the Paimio Lounge Chair (1931), which contributed significantly to the development of bent plywood technology – a notable advancement during that period. Artek’s designs primarily work with wood and avoid intricate decorations or additional hardware, instead emphasizing practicality.

Scattered among the collection are whimsical drawings reminiscent of Moomin’s childlike artistry, creating a lively and genuine aesthetic that resembles spontaneous doodles made by young artists. This unique partnership signifies the evolving landscape of design, as more and more millennials and Gen Zers blend collectibles, fleeting pop culture elements, and modern media with sophisticated pieces in their living spaces.

Beyond the unique partnership, Artek is also unveiling an abstract art poster as a tribute to its 90 years in operation. The minimalist layout showcasing artwork by Finnish artist Inka Bell, together with the Moomin furniture assortment, will be accessible starting March 20th at selected Artek retailers, Artek-owned stores, and their online platform.
