I was so excited to see Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo together at the Wicked premiere in New York! They both looked amazing, but they weren’t really drawing a lot of attention to themselves on the red carpet – they kept it pretty chill, which was nice to see.
People Magazine reported that Cynthia Erivo was unable to do interviews because she had lost her voice. Universal Pictures confirmed to the magazine that this was the sole reason for canceling the interviews.
The film’s cast, including Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Ethan Slater, joined director Jon M. Chu on the red carpet. During the event’s livestream, Ariana Grande explained why Cynthia Erivo was quiet, protectively holding onto her and saying, “I’m not letting her speak. She has to rest her voice!”
Ariana Grande shared that celebrating in New York felt special because the Gershwin Theatre is where the production is based. Cynthia Erivo added, “It’s really beautiful that we’re finishing here, where it all began.”
During the livestream, Grande explained that she was experiencing throat discomfort and needed to take care of it. She said, “It feels like something’s coating my throat, so we’re trying to soothe it. I appreciate your understanding—there’s a limit to what anyone can handle.”
During the event, Ariana Grande politely asked the photographers to lower their voices. The noise level had become disruptive, and she explained that a quieter environment would be more relaxed for everyone.
