Archie Movie In The Works From DC’s Tom King

Universal Pictures is planning to adapt Archie into a live-action film, with renowned writer Tom King penning the screenplay.

Tom King Adapting Archie

In the comics world, it’s Tom King who is renowned for his work on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and as an executive producer and writer on the forthcoming Lanterns series from HBO/DC Studios. He will be penning the script for this project. Previously, his comic book version of Supergirl was brought to life in a film directed by Craig Gillespie, set to hit theaters next summer.

Producers Behind Spider-Verse On Board

The project originates from filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for movies like “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “21 Jump Street,” and “The Lego Movie.” Emma Watts, a former head of 20th Century Studios who initially presented the project to Lord and Miller, is one of the producers, along with Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Aditya Sood, president of Lord Miller.

Universal’s Britt Hennemuth and Christine Sun are overseeing development.

Archie Comics Legacy

Archie Comics boasts a rich heritage, tracing its roots to the 22nd issue of Pep Comics published way back in 1941. This popular series revolves around the character Archie Andrews and his companions Veronica, Betty, and Jughead, as they navigate the ups and downs of small-town high school life.

The television show “Riverdale,” airing on The CW network, presented a grittier interpretation of its source material and broadcast from 2017 to 2023 spanning 137 episodes. However, the production team believes there’s room for tapping into fresh viewership in movie theaters.

Archie Comics has an impressive global reach, having sold more than three billion comics in numerous languages worldwide. In India, they have sold approximately 100 million copies over the past fifty years. Beyond their comic books, the brand also gained international recognition through the success of their hit song “Sugar, Sugar,” which sold over twenty million copies.

Lord and Miller’s Statement

In a joint statement, Lord and Miller said:

For years, we’ve been avid admirers of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and their group across various adaptations. Upon learning about Tom King’s unique spin on this timeless content, we immediately envisioned it as a blockbuster movie that would captivate both long-time fans and fresh audiences alike. We can hardly contain our enthusiasm to bring these cherished characters to the cinema screen.
