Embark Studios, the developer of the upcoming shooter ARC Raiders, has announced how player progress will be handled. Unlike many similar games that force all players to reset periodically, ARC Raiders will let players choose to wipe their progress. Doing so will grant them permanent, exclusive rewards.
I’m really intrigued by what the studio is trying with this new game! It’s tackling a big problem with extraction shooters – how quickly the really dedicated players get so much stronger than everyone else. It gets to the point where those hardcore players might just skip all the story missions and team-based stuff, and instead just focus on hunting down newer or more casual players who don’t stand a chance. Hopefully, this new approach will fix that!
Traditionally, game developers have dealt with this issue by periodically resetting everyone’s progress – wiping out all resources and equipment. While this aims to create a level playing field, it erases players’ accomplishments, and often frustrates casual players the most, even though it’s intended to help them.
ARC Raiders won’t have progress resets for everyone. If you want a fresh start, you can complete special in-game Projects. Finishing these Projects will let you reset your account, but you’ll keep any cosmetic items you’ve earned – those are permanent!
I’m really excited to hear that Embark Studios is thinking about rewarding us players for voluntarily resetting our progress! They’re planning to give us cool stuff like unique cosmetics and permanent boosts to our accounts. The best part is, they’ve made it clear these rewards won’t give anyone an unfair edge in combat – it’s all just cosmetic and quality-of-life improvements, which is awesome.
The studio is trying to find a balance that benefits all players. While it won’t completely fix existing issues like a full reset would, it aims to be fairer and recognize the time players have already invested in the game. The developers acknowledge this is a complicated issue and will continue to monitor feedback and make adjustments as needed.
