Anne Imhof Unveils Her Largest Performance to Date in New York

German artist and choreographer Anne Imhof recently revealed her most extensive performance yet in New York City. Entitled “DOOM: HOUSE OF HOPE,” this immersive three-hour production converts the vast 55,000 square foot drill hall of the Park Avenue Armory into a potent panorama that combines themes of community, hope, and disorder.

In the space sandwiched between a gym floor covering and an eye-catching, ominous red countdown clock suspended on a giant screen, viewers are straightaway ushered into Imhof’s brooding teenage world. This production is a modern take on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” with a motley assortment of items and characters decorating the stage named “DOOM.” Among these are cheerleaders, basketball players, a band with a baby-punk sound, and no fewer than two dozen Cadillac Escalades.

This performance boasts an eclectic troupe of 60 artists – dancers, musicians, poets, skaters, among them actress Talia Ryder and Eliza Douglas, a favorite of Balenciaga – who collaborate closely with Imhof. The show explores multiple art forms such as tattooing, line dancing, live music, and poetry. Imhof described it as a heartfelt tribute to New York, a city that holds a special place in his heart and has been a source of inspiration for him over the years. He feels privileged to collaborate with a vibrant group of artists from this city’s artistic scene.

Underneath its tough outer shell, the game “DOOM” resonates deeply with a sense of title-inspired optimism. Imhof introduces a dance-like language that portrays a universe where apprehension and positivity are in a constant dance. What might seem grim at first glance mirrors our collective mindset – its undead, lifeless appearance – with striking clarity.

This artwork signifies Imhof’s comeback to New York since her exhibition at MoMA PS1 back in 2015, and it expands upon concepts and motifs from Imhof’s award-winning extended performance “Faust”, which was displayed during the 2017 Venice Biennial.

The task isn’t finished until the spectators are there, and I eagerly anticipate feeling the vibrancy that New York will infuse into it.

The exhibit titled “DOOM: HOUSE OF HOPE” is currently being displayed in New York, running until March 12. You can secure your tickets for this event via the Armory’s official website.
