As a big fan of trying new shows, I was really disappointed to hear that Amazon Prime Video has canceled two of its dramas, *Countdown* and *Butterfly*. Both shows only got one season, which is a shame – I was hoping they’d get a chance to develop further!
Both shows, featuring Jensen Ackles and Daniel Dae Kim as leads, premiered earlier in 2024 and were made by Amazon MGM Studios.
I was really excited to see both shows land in Nielsen’s top 10 for streaming! It’s a great sign they’re grabbing people’s attention. I started watching *Countdown*, which Derek Haas created, and it’s about an LAPD detective who gets pulled into a special unit to hunt down the person who killed a Homeland Security officer. It’s a pretty compelling premise!
The investigation revealed a hidden plot, sparking a desperate attempt to protect Los Angeles.
Following the season’s dramatic finale, Jensen Ackles shared his optimism about a potential second season. He explained that the ending was intentionally created to set up future storylines, and he’s hopeful Amazon will renew the show based on positive audience and critical reception. He admitted it would be disappointing if the story ended abruptly.
However, critics didn’t react well to the show. Aramide Tinubu, chief TV critic for Variety, described Countdown as boring and slow-paced, noting that the characters weren’t memorable and the story felt shallow. The series currently has a low 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from critics.
Created by Steph Cha and Ken Woodruff, *Butterfly* centers around a retired U.S. intelligence agent whose previous work comes back to endanger his family. Despite having the potential for a compelling thriller, critic Tinubu found the show relied too much on style over substance, calling it “more smoke and mirrors than gritty character-driven material.”
Amazon Prime Video has been making changes to its shows lately. They’ve canceled a couple of series, but also decided to continue with three others: *We Were Liars*, *Overcompensating*, and a new crime thriller called *Ballard* which is connected to the *Bosch* world. Another show, *Motorheads*, has also been canceled.
It’s always a shame when a TV show doesn’t get a second season, and it seems like both *Countdown* and *Butterfly* had trouble gaining popularity with audiences and critics alike.
