Alan Cumming Spills Details on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Filming: Studio Took Measures to Keep Him From Sharing Spoilers

Alan Cumming is set to reprise his role as Nightcrawler in the upcoming Marvel film, Avengers: Doomsday. In a chat with Gold Derby, Cumming revealed some intriguing details about the production process, including how he worked mostly alone due to extensive use of green screen and face replacement technology. He joked that even though characters were given fake names, he often didn’t know who he was acting alongside, adding that he may have made a mistake when he once hinted at something online.

Originally, Cumming portrayed Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United back in 2003. He was reluctant to reprise the role due to the laborious and tiring process required for character preparation. However, this time around, advancements in technology significantly sped up and streamlined the process.

For the first time, fans caught wind of Cumming’s return during a lengthy Marvel Studios live broadcast. During this event, the studio unveiled 27 actors set to feature in the massive crossover movie. Joining celebrities such as Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, several veteran X-Men performers are making a comeback too. Notable names like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn will reclaim their iconic roles from the franchise, much to the delight of devoted fans.

In a playful twist, Cumming’s comeback on Jimmy Kimmel Live! also had some amusing moments. During his stint as guest host, he chatted with the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps about the tricky task of keeping movie secrets undisclosed. In jest, Pascal, portraying Mister Fantastic, blamed Cumming for leaking significant plot details. “It’s ironic that you should ask,” Pascal quipped, “The largest leak we’ve had comes from our host.” Unwittingly, Cumming had revealed a key plot point back in May, alluding to a confrontation between Nightcrawler and Mister Fantastic. Admittedly, he shared, “My publicist called me. You don’t want the wrath of your publicist.

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film is anticipated to be one of Marvel’s grandest productions. This epic tale will see the Avengers, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, Wakandans, and X-Men joining forces against Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. Directed by the Russo brothers and penned by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, this blockbuster is set for release in U.S. cinemas on December 18, 2026. Following closely will be Marvel’s Secret Wars in 2027.
