Age of Wonders 4 is shaping up to be one of the decade’s best strategy games, and the upcoming Expansion Pass 3 continues to deliver exciting new content, starting with ‘Thrones of Blood’. The expansion looks fantastic! Building on the classic vampire weakness to sunlight, the developers have introduced ‘Sunless’ terrain – a dark and atmospheric landscape perfect for these creatures. Expect grim, grey plains broken up by striking crimson roses and rivers of blood, creating a gothic and surprisingly romantic setting.
This land offers safety to vampires and those who serve them, but it drains the strength of anyone else who enters – unless they are already undead. While naturally uncommon, unless specifically altered by magical forces, vampires can expand this terrain around their settlements.
As a player, I’ve found the environment really adds to the battles! The Rose Vines are cool – they actually *grow* as the fight goes on, spreading across the map. You really need to watch where you move, because their thorns cause bleeding damage if you get too close. And then there are these creepy Banshee Pods… you can actually blow them up! It does frost damage and slows enemies down around where they were, which is a huge advantage if you use them right.
The shadowy lands contain a special resource called Blood Glass. This provides economic advantages and lets crafters imbue items with powerful blood magic.
Two new Ancient Wonders and the impressive Thorn Heart Landmark are now available. The Landmark is unique – it offers abundant resources, but expanding too far into it will create dangerous Sunless terrain, so rulers should proceed with caution.
Triumph Studios and Paradox are expanding Age of Wonders 4 with a new expansion called Thrones of Blood, scheduled to launch on November 11, 2025.
