I’m super excited because Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is getting a new DLC called Chronicles: Alexander the Great! It’s coming out on October 14, 2025, and I’ll be able to play it on my PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S. Can’t wait to dive back in and explore that era!
After being hinted at in previous content and previewed before Gamescom 2025, the new expansion lets players experience the life of a famous conqueror through an 18-mission campaign with a unique, customizable army. It adds three new playable factions – Macedonians, Thracians, and Puru – to the game. Similar to previous expansions, these factions aren’t available for ranked online play, but can be used in custom games and skirmishes.
Macedonians are known for their strong infantry formations using long spears, supported by skilled cavalry. Thracians earn wealth through successful attacks and raiding. The Puru, originating from India, utilize war elephants and long-range attacks in battle.
As you progress through the campaign, you can customize your army to reflect how Alexander the Great’s forces became more varied as he expanded eastward, integrating soldiers from the lands he conquered. You’ll be able to unlock 16 new unit types – like Achaemenid chariots and Puru war elephants – along with four new technologies to enhance your strategies.
I’m really excited about how they’re doing the cutscenes – they’re going for a look inspired by this incredible ancient Roman mosaic called the Alexander Mosaic. It’s a small thing, but it’s a really cool artistic touch that I think will make the game stand out.
