It’s common to see co-stars presented as getting along well to promote their work, but sometimes disagreements become serious enough to end up in court. While most issues are resolved through unions or HR departments, some actresses have had to sue their colleagues. These lawsuits often involve claims of broken contracts, harassment, or injuries that happened on or after set. By pursuing legal action, these women have brought attention to the difficult legal issues surrounding how people behave at work in the entertainment industry.
FKA Twigs

In late 2020, singer and actress Tahliah Barnett, known as FKA Twigs, sued her former partner, Shia LaBeouf, alleging a pattern of abuse during their relationship. The lawsuit described instances of sexual battery, assault, physical violence, and emotional manipulation following their meeting on the set of the film ‘Honey Boy.’ Barnett stated her intention in filing the suit was to shed light on abusive control tactics. The case has sparked important conversations about safety and accountability in the film industry.
Amber Heard

As a movie fan, it was hard to watch the whole Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial unfold. It started with Depp suing Heard for defamation, but she countersued, claiming his lawyer had falsely called her allegations of abuse a fabrication. During the televised trial in 2022, Heard detailed instances of what she said was domestic violence during their marriage. In the end, the jury awarded her $2 million in damages on one claim, but also found she had defamed Depp in other instances. It was a really public and honestly, pretty sad case, especially knowing they used to work together on ‘The Rum Diary’.
Esmé Bianco

In 2021, actress Esmé Bianco, known for her role in ‘Game of Thrones’, sued musician Marilyn Manson (Brian Warner) in federal court. They had collaborated on projects like a music video and an unfinished film called ‘Phantasmagoria’. Bianco accused Manson of sexual assault, sexual battery, and sex trafficking during their professional and personal relationship, alleging he used his power and the possibility of future work to manipulate and abuse her. The case was settled confidentially in early 2023, ending the public legal battle.
Eliza Dushku

Eliza Dushku sued CBS and the show ‘Bull’ after experiencing inappropriate behavior from her co-star, Michael Weatherly. She claimed she was harassed and that the show’s writers removed her character because she reported Weatherly’s actions. The issue was settled out of court through mediation, with Dushku receiving a $9.5 million payment to cover the income she would have earned if she had continued as a regular cast member.
Sondra Locke

In 1989, actress Sondra Locke sued Clint Eastwood, with whom she’d co-starred in films like ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales’ and ‘The Gauntlet’. The lawsuit began as a claim for palimony, but Locke later added accusations of fraud and a breach of trust. She alleged that Eastwood had offered her a fake directing job at Warner Bros. simply to get her to drop her initial lawsuit. The case went to trial in 1996, where Locke tried to demonstrate that Eastwood had intentionally funded the deal knowing her projects would never actually be made.
