Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart in the new HBO Max series Lanterns (expected in early 2026), has announced that filming has finished. He also gave fans a preview of what they can expect from this fresh take on the Green Lantern universe.
Lanterns is of a grand scale
Speaking with Esquire, Pierre confirmed the large-scale nature of the HBO Max series.
We just finished filming Lanterns. It was a huge production, massive in every way possible, he explained.
As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about this new series! It’s part of the big plans James Gunn and Peter Safran have for the DC Universe, and it’s going to focus on both John Stewart and Hal Jordan. They’re both Green Lanterns stationed on Earth, and they’re teaming up to solve a really intriguing, dark mystery that seems connected to everything else happening in the DCU. It sounds like a big, interconnected story, and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Relatable Heroes
Pierre explained what drew him to the character and what audiences can expect from the show’s tone.
He explained that one of the most appealing things about the Lantern Corps is how, despite being heroes, they aren’t afraid to show their imperfections, which makes them very easy to connect with.
He added that the characters’ humanity and imperfection were a central part of the show’s approach.
What really struck me about this film is how convincingly the characters try to become better versions of themselves – it’s a very active and deliberate process they undergo. Honestly, watching their journey actually made me think, ‘You know, maybe I could join the Green Lantern Corps!’ It’s a bit of a leap, I know, but the film makes the idea of intense training and immense responsibility feel… attainable. It almost inspires you to fill out an application and give it a shot!

Bringing the Lantern Corps to Life
Pierre explained that Lanterns focuses on telling realistic stories with well-developed characters, all set in a science fiction world.
He explained that the appeal lies in how easily people can connect with it, and he hopes that connection will be felt by everyone.
This series is a major launch for DC Studios’ new shared universe and is expected to premiere on Max in 2026.

Pierre Also Stars in Star Wars: Starfighter
In addition to Lanterns, Pierre will be in Star Wars: Starfighter, a movie directed by Shawn Levy. He shared that Levy is a very energetic and detail-oriented director.
Shawn is a fantastic person, and incredibly passionate about this project. Everyone involved truly cares and we’re all working hard to deliver the best possible film for the fans. We know how important this is, and we’re really thrilled about it.
