As a long-time follower of hip hop culture, I’ve seen my fair share of beefs between artists. However, the ongoing tension between Drake and A$AP Rocky feels like a modern-day soap opera, complete with love triangles and jabs through lyrics.
Drake and A$AP Rocky used to get along well, but they don’t seem to be friends anymore. It’s possible that they might have some disagreements, perhaps about shared romantic interests, as they both have dated Rihanna in the past, who is now a mother to Rocky’s children. Additionally, they have both been romantically linked to Sophie Brussaux, with Drake now having a child with her.
The two men have recently exchanged harsh words, with Rocky contributing to the tracks “Show of Hands” and “Highjack”, while Drake is featured in “Family Matters”.
As a longtime fan of hip-hop music, I’ve seen my fair share of feuds between rappers over the years. However, the ongoing beef between J. Cole (Rocky) and Drake has always been particularly intriguing to me because it seems to be more about artistic differences than personal animosity. But this week, something changed when J. Cole sat down with Billboard for an interview.
Rocky clarified, “You need to understand, some individuals have been taking indirect jabs for quite a while now.” He added, “I’m not involved in that kind of situation. I don’t respond that way at the moment. I have more important matters to attend to than petty disputes. What you see outside is genuine. It’s real. People are getting hurt and killed every day. There are constant attacks. The trivial matters we’re discussing here are insignificant compared to the serious issues.”
On the track “Show of Hands” from Future and Metro Boomin’s album “We Still Don’t Trust You“, Rocky made a jibe at Drake, hinting that Drake had been involved with Brussaux prior to their relationship.
“Rocky phones Pluto, Metro, they should have included me on the initial call / Some people boast about being the toughest, but I’ve dated the most challenging one / There are men who get emotional over women, is there a problem or something? / Before you even existed, I had already conquered it; A$AP Rocky was the first to conquer it.”
On “Family Matters,” Drake takes aim at Kendrick Lamar in most parts, but saves a few lines for other adversaries. In this track, he playfully teases Rocky about being with Rihanna before him and hints that the Harlem rapper focuses more on his fashion sense than his music.
In a more straightforward and easy-to-understand manner, the lyrics could be rephrased as follows: “A punk from the Northside, Rakim is talking nonsense once more / Feeling cocky because you hit my car first / Man, do the calculations, who was I dating then? / I didn’t even know you rapped at all / People only mention your fashion again / Maybe you need to have another child again / Before you think about dropping any rhymes again,” raps Drake.
There’s a high likelihood that the back-and-forth between them isn’t finished, as Rocky is set to release his new album titled “Don’t Be Dumb” on August 30. Therefore, it seems probable that he’ll have plenty more to say about Drake in the future.
